‘Welcome To The Big House’: Hijikata Relishing Rafa Clash

Claim 100% up to $1,000 in Casino Bonuses on your first THREE deposits

Rinky Hijikata had just landed in New York Thursday when the messages started lighting up his phone.

“The first one was from my manager, Kelly [Wolf], and she said something along the lines of ‘Welcome to the Big House!’” Hijikata told ATPTour.com. “There was no real context, so I really didn’t know what she was talking about. I thought maybe she was saying ‘Welcome to New York’.

“I got a few others like ‘I can’t believe your draw!’ so that’s when I went and had a look. Pretty exciting.”

When he called up the US Open draw he found his name on Line 127, one above second seed and 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. The context was no longer lacking.

    [ATP APP]

Hijikata could not have asked for a more illustrious opponent for his Grand Slam main draw debut, and the 21-year-old wild card eagerly awaits the moment when he steps on court alongside Nadal in New York on Tuesday.

“It’s not often you get to play a player of that calibre and I’m definitely pumped,” said Hijikata. “I can’t wait to go out there and give it my best shot.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to go out there on the biggest stages of tennis and try to have a big crack at players like that. I’m excited for the contest, I’m excited for the challenge. I want to go out there and represent everyone and try and give it my best shot.”

It is not the first time this season Hijikata has been thrown in at the deep end. In Los Cabos earlier this month, his reward for notching his maiden ATP Tour win was a second-round clash against World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. The Australian was not overawed by the occasion despite falling to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat in Mexico, and he believes that experience will help him as he plots an upset against the four-time champion Nadal in New York.

“That was probably one of the biggest matches I’ve ever played,” said Hijikata. “That was a great experience for me, I think I learned a lot from that. The atmosphere and everything was a bit different than anything I’ve ever played in. Hopefully that will help me in good stead for what’s coming on Tuesday.

“I guess all the good players have a bit of an aura around them maybe and once you step out on-court, you don’t really know what to expect the first time. So, I went in a little clueless, but this time around hopefully I can settle the nerves a bit quicker.”

    [NEWSLETTER FORM]

Born in Sydney after his parents emigrated from Japan, Hijikata grew up watching arguably the greatest generation of players the ATP Tour has ever seen. Yet while the likes of Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were obvious inspirations for the 21-year-old, it was a legendary home favourite who had him most captivated as a youngster.

“I think ‘Rusty’ (Lleyton Hewitt) was the guy I loved watching the most,” said Hijikata. “He’s an Aussie and the way he competed on the court, I thought was pretty cool.

“Then as I got a little bit older, I think Rafa and Roger when they had their big rivalry going that was pretty special. That was hard to beat, playing each other pretty much every Slam and the quality of their tennis was out of this world. Those two of mine have been idols of mine growing up and then obviously Novak as well, a bit more recently has been on a tear.”

Hijikata has so far trodden a slightly different path to those ATP Tour greats. He played two seasons in college tennis for the University of North Carolina before turning pro in 2021, but the Australian only ever had one final destination in mind.

“I definitely went over with the intentions of playing tennis after,” said Hijikata. “That was always my goal. That was one of my main reasons I chose North Carolina, I thought it would give me the best platform to get better and grow as a player and a person and hopefully hold me in good stead for the Tour and I think that’s exactly what it did. Those two years definitely helped me a lot.”

After qualifying for his first ATP Tour appearance at the ATP 250 event in Melbourne in January, Hijikata has worked his way up to his current career-high of No. 198 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings thanks to some strong performances at ATP Challenger Tour and Futures level. His next mission is to add greater consistency to his game.

“I think it’s been a little bit of an up-and-down season,” said Hijikata. “It’s my first full year on Tour so there’s a lot of learning that I’ve got to do, I think that’s been the story of the year.

“There’s been some really good patches and then there’s been some patches where I’ve been struggling a bit, but I guess that’s kind of life on Tour, you’re not going to be able to win and play well every week so it’s kind of just dealing with the losses and dealing with the weeks where you aren’t doing so well.

“I think that’s been one of the main things I’ve learned this year; not every week is going to be pretty, if you string a few good weeks together then it ends up being a pretty good year.”

    [FOLLOW ACTION]

There may be plenty of lessons left to learn, but Hijikata has no shortage of role models to learn from as he finds his way on Tour. Fellow Australian John Millman in particular has been a source of sage advice for the youngster.

“He’s always been a big one,” said Hijikata of World No. 104 Millman. “He came and chatted when we were on the Junior Davis Cup team and he just said that you’re never going to be able to play at a level if you don’t believe that you belong there.

“That’s something that I’ve taken to heart, and I guess every level that I step up, I try to back the work you’ve put in and all the hard work you’ve done in your training. Hope that puts you in good stead and have the belief that you deserve your spot here and you do deserve to be there. I think it’s easy to get swept away with guys’ rankings, their achievements. Stepping up levels, it can be tough.”

Relatively straightforward yet effective advice from Millman, and Hijikata is taking the same approach as he prepares for the biggest match of his career against Nadal. “Try not to drop anything too short and in the middle of the court,” said the Australian of his gameplan for taking on the second seed. “That’s a good start.”

Pariplay Appoints Doina Stefanescu as the New VP of Delive

Claim 100% up to $1,000 in Casino Bonuses on your first THREE deposits

Pariplay, a subsidiary of NeoGames, has appointed Doina Stefanescu as the new VP of delivery. Stefanescu joined the company from DraftKings where she most recently worked as director of gaming operations. This development comes days after Pariplay added a new studio to its Fusion platform.

Stefanescu Will Be Tasked With Meeting Market Requirements

As the new VP of delivery, Stefanescu will have to define the strategy of Pariplay and address market requirements. Developing business plans for products by suppliers and identifying customer needs will also be within her scope.

The MD of Pariplay, Adrian Bailey, shared a few words on Stefanescu’s appointment. He stated that the company is thrilled to have her on board and noted that this appointment is in line with Pariplay’s commitment to evolving its “product offering.”

Bailey ended by saying that Stefanescu’s experience is second to none and thanks to that fact, she’s an invaluable team member.

Before joining Pariplay, Stefanescu worked as DraftKings’ director of gaming operations and before that, she was the COO of EveryMatrix. Additionally, she was the CEO of Casino Engine and worked as the head of casino products at SBTech.

Commenting on her appointment, Stefanescu stated that she’s excited about the opportunity and she’s happy to join a company that has had “a fantastic journey so far.” She noted that Pariplay’s strategy for the future is bold and that she’s looking forward to implementing her knowledge to help the company grow.

Pariplay Has Been Expanding Across Multiple Jurisdictions Recently

Pariplay has been quite active in the recent period. Not only did the aggregator gain an interactive gaming manufacturer license from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, but the company also increased its presence in Switzerland.

The expanded Swiss market presence was made possible by going live with Casinò Lugano’s brand, Swiss4Win.ch. Thanks to the deal, Swiss4Win.ch will benefit from the Fusion platform of Pariplay and thus, will carry the content of Wizard Games.

Andrew Maclean, Pariplay’s VP of sales, stated that Switzerland is an important market for Pariplay and the launch of Wizard Games’ content at Swiss4Win.ch represents the start of a long and successful collaboration between the two parties.

Casinò Lugano SA’s CEO and board member, Paolo Sanvido, stated that the company is always searching for new and engaging content and that the deal with Pariplay “provides games that fit the bill perfectly.”

North America has been quite the focus of this company. Aside from securing a Pennsylvania license, Pariplay partnered with Atlantic Lottery and thus, continued to expand in Canada. Thanks to the deal, Pariplay will supply Atlantic Lottery with a variety of games. The partnership between the two came off the heels of Pariplay’s license approvals in Ontario.

  • IGT And DoubleDown Interactive Sign Settlement Over Benson Litigation

IGT And DoubleDown Interactive Sign Settlement Over Benson Litigation

Claim 100% up to $1,000 in Casino Bonuses on your first THREE deposits

International provider of gaming technologies International Game Technology (IGT) and former IGT subsidiary DoubleDown Interactive have announced that they have succeeded in reaching an agreement in principle in connection with the legal case Benson v. DoubleDown Interactive.

The Settlement Amount of $415 Million Will Be Covered by IGT and DoubleDown Interactive

According to the terms of the settlement agreement, the total amount that will be contributed to the settlement fund will be $415 million. The amount will be divided between IGT and its subsidiaries and DoubleDown Interactive with IGT contributing $269.75 million. The amount that DoubleDown Interactive has to pay will be $145.25 million. As a result of the settlement, all plaintiffs are going to drop all claims in relation to the lawsuit.

In April 2018, Adrienne Benson filed a lawsuit against DoubleDown Interactive and an IGT subsidiary at the US District Court. Benson claimed that the online casinos owned and operated by the defendants are illegal as they operate in breach of Washington’s Recovery of Money Lost at Gambling Act and Washington’s Consumer Protection Act. In July of the same year, more plaintiffs were added to the class action. The plaintiffs accused the defendants of unjust enrichment. Their claims were in connection with the recovery of funds lost on gambling.

In order for the settlement to be finalized first the US Federal District Court for the Western District of Washington has to approve the reached settlement agreement.

Digital games and web-based platforms developer DoubleDown Interactive was a subsidiary of IGT. The gaming technologies provider sold DoubleDown Interactive to South Korea-based game production company DoubleU Games back in April 2017, for the amount of $825 million. The deal formed a part of the signed strategic partnership between IGT and DoubleU Games regarding the production for social casino games.

Accrued Expenses by IGT and DoubleDown Interactive in Connection with the Lawsuit

Stemming from the costs in connection with the settlement agreement, both IGT and DoubleDown Interactive will suffer non-operating expenses for the period from July 1 to September 30, 2022. The expense for IGT will amount to $119.75 million, while the expense of DoubleDown Interactive will be $70.25 million. Additionally, DoubleDown Interactive has so far incurred expenses in connection with the Benson Matters totaling $75 million. On the other hand, IGT’s expenses related to the Benson case, which the company reported during the period from April 1 to June 30, amount to a total of $150 million.

  • BIA: Operators May Spend $1.8B on Ads in 2022

BIA: Operators May Spend $1.8B on Ads in 2022

Claim 100% up to $1,000 in Casino Bonuses on your first THREE deposits

Each year, US gambling operators tend to spend a lot on advertising. With the US gaming market being as competitive as it is, no company can allow its marketing efforts to be lacking. BIA Advisory Services, a US-based consultancy, predicts that this year’s spending will be much higher than last year’s as gambling companies remain bullish on attracting more customers.

BIA Believes Marketing Expenses Will Skyrocket

Experts believe that US operators may spend as much as $1.8 billion to promote their products across the country. For comparison, last year, operators spent only $1 million on ads. Nicole Ovadia, vice president of forecasting and analysis at BIA, also shared that ad spending may reach $1.9 billion in 2023.

However, the actual spending in 2023 may be much higher, depending on potential changes to the regulatory landscape. If, for example, another big state legalizes gaming, companies will have to spend more to expand their influence while the market is still fresh. One such state is California which may soon see the launch of its own sports betting market.

BIA experts also noted that the popularity of gaming helps local media sellers in regions where gambling is legal.

Companies’ Spending May Depend on Regulations

So, which are the biggest spenders? It is hardly surprising that the companies that spend the most on advertisement are also some of the biggest operators in the US. The list is headed by companies such as Caesars Entertainment, DraftKings and FanDuel, which all spare no effort to promote their products to gamers in the country.

Caesars, for example, recently ran a $1 billion campaign to acquire new customers. Following this stellar campaign, the company’s chief executive, Tom Reeg, said that Caesars will tone down the ad expenses. FanDuel, on the other hand, will “spend what it needs in order to be competitive” but will try to maintain a degree of financial discipline.

Despite companies’ intentions to take a step back and reduce the money they spend on marketing, the changing regulatory landscape may force them to spend some more. As mentioned, operators will have to adapt when new states launch legalized gambling. While everyone remains focused on the fate of sports betting in California, other states, including Ohio, Massachusetts and Maryland, prepare to legalize iGaming next year.

While more markets mean more expenses on ads, they also mean more customers. If companies hope to grab the lion’s share of customers in new markets, they would also have to invest more in ads.

BlueBet Launched Its First US ClutchBet Sportsbook in Iowa

Claim 100% up to $1,000 in Casino Bonuses on your first THREE deposits

Mobile sports betting operator BlueBet announced late Sunday that it has received its sports betting license from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC).

First Stage of US Entry Strategy

The license issued by the IRGC allowed ASX-listed BlueBet to take its first bet in Iowa under its ClutchBet brand Monday afternoon, making the state the first to become operational for BlueBet and marking a significant milestone for the company’s “Capital Lite” entry strategy in the US.

“This is a huge moment in BlueBet’s history,” commented Bill Richmond, chief executive officer of BlueBet, excited to announce that the company is bringing its sportsbook offering to sports fans in Iowa and confident that the fans “will respond well” to the company’s “first online offering and differentiated market positioning.”

The Australian mobile wagering operator has undergone a successful verification and testing process for its proprietary technology with Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) and has the platform to execute the first stage of its US entry strategy.

The launch in Iowa was made possible after BlueBet signed a five-year market access deal with the Dubuque Racing Association that operates the Q Casino and Hotel in July last year. The deal has an option for BlueBet to extend its duration by another five years.

“I would like to thank everybody who has made this moment possible, including our BlueBet team and valued partners in Iowa, the Dubuque Racing Association,” Richmond added.

By launching its B2C brand ClutchBet, BlueBet is looking to set an example of how the combination of its tech and operating team can run profitable sportsbook operations ahead of launches in Colorado, Louisiana and Indiana where market access has already been secured.

Second Stage of US Entry Strategy

Bluebet is not planning on extending its B2C offering outside of these four states as the company considers that its B2B differentiated offer is its best approach to the continuing to grow sports betting market in the US.

According to Richmond, the launch of the ClutchBet sportsbook in these four states will complete the first stage and shift the focus to the second stage of BlueBet’s US entry strategy – the launch of its labeled Sportsbook-as-a-Solution offer – and to execute on it, the company would need to enter into B2B partnerships.

Earlier today, BlueBet released its FY22 financial results and revealed that the business continued on the growth trajectory, posting turnover and wagering revenue growth of 48.5% and 53% year-over-year, respectively.

  • Fanatics Boss Confirms Sports Betting Coming Before Year’s End

Fanatics Boss Confirms Sports Betting Coming Before Year’s End

Claim 100% up to $1,000 in Casino Bonuses on your first THREE deposits

Fanatics‘ long courtship of sports betting in the United States may finally be fleshing itself out, as company founder Michael Rubin confirmed the news during a podcast interview. Rubin appeared on FanDuel’s podcast The Volume with Colin Cowherd.

Yes, Fanatics Will Accept Wagers in 2022

The fact that Rubin has been invited to share the news on what is clearly a rival platform and product is interesting, though. Were FanDuel and Fanatics to butt heads, Rubin would have probably chosen to not attend, nor FanDuel invites a competitor.

Regardless, Fanatics seems all set. Bets on the Sixers (referring to NBA franchise the Philadelphia 76ers) will be accepted by year’s end, Rubin confirmed. Earlier this year in June, it became clear that the company is divesting from the 76ers and the New Jersey Devils, an NHL franchise, which many interpreted as the company active preemptively to ensure that should it enter sports betting, there is no conflict of interests.

Fanatics seems to be all systems go to realize its sports betting ambitions and while details about the full picture are still somewhat lacking, there have been many interesting developments. Notwithstanding the share sales, Fanatics is also hiring 60 new people for its betting and gaming business, according to job postings on its career website.

Fanatics also managed to secure former CEO Matt King from FanDuel, which once again links the two companies.

The Single-Most Valuable Company in Sports

The company already holds a patent for a mobile betting app, sportsbook, and casino. Rubin also does not lack confidence, arguing that Fanatics could be the single most valuable entity in sports and even technology.

Fanatics is not looking to make an immediate splash in the market, either, as Rubin seems to be taking a very long-term view of the market. Rather, Rubin expects for the dust to settle first and regulation to go mainstream everywhere in the United States. It already has in more than 34 states, but there are more.

Fanatics is in a good starting position as it has a customer database of 100 million people which will give it a strong push forward once it launches in earnest.
