  • A “feeling” Liverpool will sign Romeo Lavia, midfielder is a “manager’s dream”, plans for Thiago and Doak & more

A “feeling” Liverpool will sign Romeo Lavia, midfielder is a “manager’s dream”, plans for Thiago and Doak & more

Hello and welcome to my weekly LFC transfer news column for CaughtOffside on Substack – click here to subscribe for more exclusive content from Fabrizio Romano, Ben Jacobs, Christian Falk and Jonathan Johnson!

I’m not sure whether Jarell Quansah, 20, is ready to step up after just a handful of professional games in League One with Bristol Rovers. He could probably do with a loan. And so looking at the options, and some of the issues we’ve seen in pre-season, particularly with Matip, it feels like a defensive signing is needed. Ideally, it would be a young player who could develop over the next 12 months before taking over when Matip’s contract expires, but the trouble is that there is still so much to do in terms of finishing the midfield rebuild! That has to be the priority before anything is spent on a new centre-back.

I do also think that the ‘issues’ we have seen in pre-season would not necessarily be solved by simply signing a centre-back. Much of it stems from a lack of compactness and a lack of pressure on the ball higher up the pitch, which then leaves the last line exposed when opponents play around the press. And with Trent Alexander-Arnold spending as much time in midfield as he does at right-back, that means a lot of work for the right-sided centre-back. Konate will be earning overtime this season, he needs to stay fit!

Liverpool sources were saying earlier in the summer that £50m for Lavia was excessive, but that was before the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson amplified their need for a midfielder. I get the impression that the club have looked at the market for potential No.6s/deep-lying midfielders and have not been too impressed, hence the fact they’ve circled back to Lavia. He’s certainly a gamble, given his age, the amount of games he’s played and the fact he’s a very different kind of player to Fabinho, more of a builder than a destroyer. The plus side is that he clearly has a high ceiling, his wages are relatively low and he wants to come to Liverpool. My feeling is that a compromise will be found, but it probably should have been found already.

Szoboszlai might need a little more time before he gets up to his top level, but there have certainly been signs of his potential in pre-season. He is clearly a very confident player, who always wants the ball and is technically very accomplished. He looks a good athlete and, having spoken briefly with him over in Germany after the Karlsruher SC friendly, he seems a solid character too. I think it’s fair to expect a slight adaptation period, in terms of the intensity of a new league and the specific demands of playing in a Klopp side, but I expect him to have a good impact this season.

    • The 29-year-old spent the latter part of last year in Germany with Bayern Munich
    • Barcelona are reportedly in talks to secure a permanent move for the full-back

Barcelona are in talks to sign Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo following the end of his loan spell with Bayern Munich.

The 29-year-old made a shock exit from the Etihad in the January transfer window and is reportedly set for a permanent move this summer.

According to talkSport, La Liga champions Barcelona have begun talks with City over acquiring the full-back, who arrived in Manchester from Juventus in 2019 for £60m.

Pep Guardiola’s side are believed to prefer selling the Portuguese international over another loan agreement and Barcelona could be in a position to meet City’s demands following the sale of Ousmane Dembele.

Barcelona boss Xavi outlined the club’s need to bolster their defensive line after the Catalan giants’ 1-0 friendly win against AC Milan on Tuesday.

Joao Cancelo's loan move to Bayern came after a training ground bust-up with Pep Guardiola

Joao Cancelo’s loan move to Bayern came after a training ground bust-up with Pep Guardiola

‘With the departure of Dembele, we need a pure right-back now,’ he told reporters.

Cancelo made 21 appearances for Bayern during the second half of the campaign, helping the German giants capture their 11th straight Bundesliga title on an eventful final day.

The move was enforced after a training ground bust-up with Guardiola in which the defender is said to have reacted angrily after he learned that he would not be in the starting XI for City’s FA Cup clash with Arsenal in January.

Cancelo had been vocal at a lack of game time and became disruptive to the squad while his relationship with Guardiola progressively deteriorated after the World Cup.

He made his return to the City squad for the start of pre-season and caught the eye in the side’s opening friendly victory against Yokohama F. Marinos.

Newcastle United have reportedly agreed on a deal to sign Kacey Wooster from Southend.

The 16-year-old striker is highly rated in English football and he has a big future ahead of him. He could develop into a top-class prospect for Newcastle in the coming seasons.

Newcastle have shown a willingness to invest in talented young players recently and they have also completed deals to sign Micheal Mills and Sam Alaby.

According to reports, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were keen on signing Wooster from Southend as well but Newcastle have now beaten them to secure his signature.

The young striker will look to continue his development with regular football for the Newcastle youth team and it remains to be seen whether he can force his way into the first-team squad in the coming seasons.

If he ends up achieving his potential with Newcastle in the coming seasons, the investment could prove to be a masterstroke from the Premier League club in the long run.

Bayern Munich have opened exploratory talks with Brentford regarding their goalkeeper David Raya as the Spaniard is now an option for the German giants’ goalkeeping position.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who reports that the Premier League side want around £40m for the 27-year-old, which makes the deal a hard one to complete, as that fee was what turned Tottenham off making a move.

The North London club identified the Brentford star as their number one target for their goalkeeper role but that fee was not an option for Spurs.

Tottenham even agreed personal terms with the Spaniard but in the end, they decided to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli.

Yann Sommer spent the second half of last season between the sticks at Bayern but the veteran goalkeeper looks set to leave the club during the current transfer window, with Romano reporting Inter’s interest in the Swiss international.

Neuer will likely return to the number one spot next season following his long injury but Raya would be the man to succeed the Bayern legend should he decide to leave the Bavarian club next summer when his contract expires.

Though they’ve been ponderous and inactive in the current transfer window to date, it appears that West Ham might finally be getting their act together in terms of incoming transfers.

The Hammers looked to have been waiting for the Declan Rice transfer to Arsenal to be concluded before entering the market, but now there’s an obvious race against time as the new Premier League season begins in just over three weeks.

There are number of areas that the east Londoners need to strengthen in, and to that end, The Guardian (subscription required) are reporting on technical director Tim Steidten’s work behind the scenes to try and drive two transfers to a quick conclusion.

Currently in Australia, the first-team have enjoyed a decent start to their pre-season under David Moyes, most recently beating a Tottenham side for whom new manager, Ange Postecoglou, was making his debut on the bench.

If the east Londoners want 2023/24 to be a successful season, however, they are going to have to make a splash in the marketplace.

The Guardian say that the club are looking at Chelsea’s young left-back, Ian Maatsen, as a replacement for the outgoing Aaron Cresswell, whilst AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana remains a player of interest and someone who would be the replacement for Rice.

It remains to be seen whether Steidten can get either deal over the line.

There’s just over two weeks left until the start of the Championship season and, after a 2-0 loss to Man United in their opening pre-season game, Daniel Farke will arguably want to see a bit more from his Leeds side against Monaco, Nottingham Forest and Hearts, before they kick off the 2023/24 campaign at home to Cardiff City.

The German hasn’t really been given long to get to know his players and work with them on the training pitch, however, it’s likely that he won’t be looking for excuses if early results don’t go Leeds’ way.

It’s more about him being able to implement his style of play, his core values and discipline over a squad that seriously underperformed last season.

If he’s able to do all of that ahead of the new campaign, he’ll be half way to winning the battle.

Talking of battles, it’s generally in the midfield where games are won and lost and to that end, getting a combative presence there would be ideal for Farke.

According to Last Word on Sports sources, personal terms have been agreed with Rangers’ 27-year-old star, Glen Kamara.

It would seem that a deal isn’t close just yet, but the fact that the player has already agreed things at his end would suggest he’s ready for the challenge of helping the all whites bounce straight back up to the Premier League.

West Ham United are keen on signing the Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha this summer.

According to reports, the Hammers are keen on signing the 27-year-old Premier League midfielder and they have launched a £40 million bid to sign the player.

The Portuguese international has been an instant hit since his move to Fulham and he could prove to be a quality addition to the West Ham midfield as well.

The Hammers have sanctioned the departure of Declan Rice recently and they will need to bring in a quality replacement.

Palhinha has already proven himself in the Premier League and he should be able to make an immediate impact at West Ham.

The Hammers will be competing in the Europa League next season and they need to elevate the quality of their squad. Palhinha will add physicality and defensive cover to their midfield.

The 27-year-old has been one of the first names on the Fulham team sheet and it remains to be seen whether the Londoners are prepared to sell him for the reported £40 million offer from West Ham.
