David Ornstein, a dependable football news reporter for The Athletic, has shared his thoughts on the transfer strategies being considered by Chelsea this week.

In addition, he asserts that there is one position for which the club will not be making any signings in the foreseeable future.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea will move again to sign player they were very close to signing in the summer!

Striker and center defender have been touted quite a bit as potential areas of interest for Chelsea as of late, with the intention of adding additional players to their roster over the course of the next couple of transfer windows.

    David Ornstein

David Ornstein predicts Chelsea will return to sign a player they were close to in the summer!

But one position they will not be signing in is a new goalkeeper, reports David Ornstein, as cited by Chels HQ this week.

According to him, Chelsea is content with their present pair of senior goalkeepers, Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, and there are no intentions to sign a new No. 1 in the near future. He says that there are no plans to sign a new goalkeeper.

Sanchez has, for the most part, been doing admirably at Chelsea, despite a few instances in which he struggled. Since he signed with the club in the summer, Petrovic has not even made a single appearance for them in any of their matches.

  • Dodgers Sign Max Muncy To Two-Year Extension

Dodgers Sign Max Muncy To Two-Year Extension

The Dodgers announced they’ve signed infielder Max Muncy to a two-year, $24MM extension. The deal also includes a $10MM club option for 2026. The contract overwrites a $14MM option that L.A. had on Muncy’s services for next season.

A client of Hub Sports Management, Muncy will reportedly receive a $5MM signing bonus. He’ll make a $7MM salary next season and $12MM in 2025, while the deal includes additional bonuses based on his plate appearance totals. The contract has a $12MM average annual value.

Muncy, 33, has spent the past six seasons in Los Angeles. Originally an unceremonious addition via minor league contract, he quickly developed into one of the Dodgers’ most important hitters. The lefty-swinging infielder has reached the 35-homer mark in four of the five full schedules. He popped 36 longballs this past season, tying with Jorge Soler for 12th in the majors in that regard.

That power production comes with one of the sport’s more extreme offensive approaches. Muncy is a prototypical three true outcomes hitter. He pairs the home runs with an extremely patient plate approach. The deep counts translate to plenty of walks, as he has drawn a free pass in 15% of his career plate appearances. Yet he’s also prone to strikeouts and runs very low averages on balls in play thanks to a fly-ball heavy swing.

As a result, Muncy has one of the lower batting averages among everyday players. He hit .212/.333/.475 through 579 trips to the plate this past season. That’s on the heels of a .196/.329/.384 showing. Over the last two years, the two-time All-Star sports a .204/.331/.430 line in a little more than 1100 trips to the plate.

That isn’t quite as impressive as Muncy’s production over his first few seasons in Southern California. The overall offensive production is still clearly above-average, however. Muncy’s 118 wRC+ this year indicates he was 18 percentage points better than an average batter. The front office clearly values his contributions, as they’ve now signed him to three separate extensions.

Muncy has a decent amount of experience at first and second base. He spent the entire ’23 campaign at third base, logging a personal-high 1052 innings there. Metrics like Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average estimated he was between three and five runs below par at the hot corner. That’s hardly disastrous but aligns with his reputation as a bat-first player.

As he gets into his mid-30s, that profile seems likely to skew increasingly towards offense. Whether Muncy sees another 120+ starts at third base may well be determined by the Dodgers’ subsequent offseason moves. Freddie Freeman is locked in at first base. The club should welcome Gavin Lux back from the ACL tear that cost him all of 2023, likely securing second base. Miguel VargasMichael Busch and Chris Taylor are among the possibilities for third base reps, although Muncy is clearly above that group on the depth chart.

The designated hitter role will be one of the stories of the offseason. L.A. will see J.D. Martinez hit free agency in the coming days, although they could make him a qualifying offer. They’re sure to make a run at Shohei Ohtani, a potential addition that would push Muncy back to third base.

Even with this deal in place, the Dodgers have plenty of breathing room financially. Roster Resource projected the 2024 payroll around $127MM before this extension. That’ll sit a little under $140MM now, well below this year’s $223MM Opening Day estimate. The $12MM AAV pushes their luxury tax projection to roughly $155MM. That’s more than $80MM south of next year’s $237MM base threshold.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the Dodgers and Muncy were seriously discussing a two-year extension. Jon Heyman of the New York Post first suggested the deal was agreed upon. Murray had the specific salary breakdown.

TigerGaming Poker 100% up To $1000 Welcome Bonus

Manchester United are reportedly keen to recruit a second, more experienced, striker in the January transfer window to aid Rasmus Hojlund’s development.

Despite signing for the Red Devils from Atalanta for £72 million (Sky Sports) in the summer, Hojlund, 20, has struggled to get himself among the goals.

The young forward, although playing well in the 12 appearances he has made, has managed to find the back of the net on just three occasions so far.

Consequently, eager to share the striker’s workload, United’s recruitment team, according to the Daily Mail, are set to bring in a new forward once the January window opens.

There are thought to be three players on the Red Devils’ shortlist. Brentford’s Ivan Toney, although currently serving a betting-related ban, is expected to leave the Bees in the coming windows. Multiple clubs are linked with United the latest to join the race.

Porto’s Mehdi Taremi is another option with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen the Red Devils’ third and final mid-season target.

  • Crystal Palace eyeing deal to sign 32-year-old veteran after Eberechi Eze injury

Crystal Palace eyeing deal to sign 32-year-old veteran after Eberechi Eze injury

TigerGaming Poker 100% up To $1000 Welcome Bonus

Crystal Palace have been linked with a surprise move for former winger Andros Townsend.

Currently without a club after leaving Everton when his contract expired earlier in the summer, Townsend, 32, is facing a decision – continue on the lookout for a new club, or retire from professional playing.

And although the 2023-24 season is nearly 10 games in, Townsend is still without an employer.

However, according to recent reports, Roy Hodgson could look to offer the 32-year-old a late lifeline after Eberechi Eze picked up an unfortunate and untimely injury.

Speaking to GiveMeSport about the speculation surrounding Townsend, HLTCO podcast host Dan Cook, said: “I think with Townsend, I’ve been told, he is obviously unattached, or is still unattached, he spoke about it on a BBC podcast, I believe it was. And I think Crystal Palace have sort of suggested the idea that he could come in and do a couple of training sessions to see if he can get a deal or not.

“I’m not sure if that has moved on. And whilst it may sound a little bit defeatist to certain sections of the Palace fan base, it is a case of us needing bodies at this point in time. I’m not suggesting it’s the best thing for us in the long term, but at the same time, you know, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi played in the League Cup away at Manchester United, he struggled.”

  • Rockies Sign Charlie Blackmon To One-Year Extension

Rockies Sign Charlie Blackmon To One-Year Extension

The Rockies announced they’ve signed Charlie Blackmon to a one-year contract extension. He’ll return for a 14th season with the club in 2024. The ACES client receives a $13MM guarantee that offers an additional $2MM in incentives. Blackmon would receive $500K apiece for tallying 425, 450, 475 and 500 trips to the plate.

Blackmon has spent his entire career in Colorado. A second-round pick in 2009, he debuted two years later. By 2014, he’d established himself as a very good everyday center fielder. That season, Blackmon secured his first of four career All-Star nods. His best campaign came in 2017, when he finished fifth in NL MVP balloting and won the NL batting title. Colorado signed him to a $108MM extension the following April — including player options running through 2023.

The two-time Silver Slugger winner remained a well above-average hitter through 2019. He still hit above .300 during the shortened 2020 season, albeit with diminished power. Blackmon slumped to a .267/.332/.415 line between 2021-22, raising the possibility that this would be his final year in Denver. He exercised a $15MM option for this season and was set to hit the free agent market for the first time in the coming weeks.

Blackmon rebounded from his down couple seasons. Still working largely out of the leadoff spot, the 37-year-old has turned in a .283/.370/.451 slash through an even 400 plate appearances entering play Friday. He’s still not hitting for much power, but only Nolan Jones has more consistently gotten on base among Rox’s batters. Blackmon is drawing walks at a personal-best 9.8% clip while striking out just 13.5% of the time. He’s still performing well against pitchers of either handedness.

As one would expect for a player in his late-30s, Blackmon hasn’t provided much on the other side of the ball. The Rox moved him off center field after the 2018 season. Since logging 134 starts in right field two seasons ago, the veteran has seen increasing action at designated hitter. Skipper Bud Black has penciled him into the outfield on just 26 occasions while turning to him at DH 60 times.

Blackmon will presumably continue working as Colorado’s primary DH for another season. Jones has had a strong rookie year to take over left field. Kris Bryant was the primary right fielder early on, although he’s been a first baseman or DH since returning from a finger fracture. Bryant could move back to the outfield next season, which would allow the Rox to keep Blackmon out of the field on most days. If the Rockies keep their $182MM signee at first base, they could look to add a corner outfielder in free agency or trade over the winter.

It’s the second late-season extension for Colorado. The club agreed on a two-year, $20MM pact with starter Germán Márquez three weeks ago. Márquez underwent Tommy John surgery in May, so that move is primarily about 2025. This deal ensures veteran continuity for a young roster while keeping around a fan favorite who’s still a productive hitter — albeit in more of a rotational role than an everyday capacity. Reliever Brent Suter and depth starters Chris Flexen and Chase Anderson are the club’s remaining free agents.

Colorado had just over $98MM in guaranteed commitments for the ’24 campaign before re-signing Blackmon. The extension brings their commitments to around $111MM before considering arbitration-eligible players. They opened this year with a player payroll around $172MM, as calculated by Cot’s Baseball Contracts, so there should still be a decent amount of breathing room headed into the offseason.

At the same time, it’s a surprisingly strong sum for the Rox to commit. They’ll likely need to add at least three starting pitchers this offseason. Bullpen and/or center field help could be targets as well. Blackmon’s status in franchise history surely played a part in the deal, though it’s still above market expectations for a non-elite veteran hitter limited to a part-time DH/corner outfield role.

It’s a bit above the $10MM and $12MM respectively secured by J.D. Martinez and Michael Brantley last winter. Martinez indicated he took less than was available to join the Dodgers, while Brantley was coming off a season-ending shoulder procedure. Yet both players have been more productive hitters over the last few seasons than Blackmon has been. The Rockies are willing to go beyond what the veteran likely would’ve received as a free agent in order to ensure he’ll be back at Coors Field for another season.

MLBTR’s Steve Adams first reported the contract details.

Expensive West Ham signing has refused to sign a deal worth 10 times his current salary

TigerGaming Poker 100% up To $1000 Welcome Bonus

Although there was a hint of chaos behind the scenes at West Ham during the summer, it appears that one player doesn’t want to leave despite interest in his services.

Perhaps the joy in winning the Europa Conference League had something to do with the decision, as well as the prospect of significant strengthening once the east Londoners sold their, now former, captain, Declan Rice.

Whatever the reasons, even the evident riches of the Saudi Pro League wasn’t enough for Nayef Aguerd to consider moving away from east London.

According to FootMercato journalist, Santi Aouna, the Moroccan refused to move to Al-Ittihad this summer.

His comments on X (formerly Twitter) were in response to a post that had suggested it was West Ham refusing to sell him which had scuppered the deal.

Aguerd’s decision will surely be music to the ears of David Moyes who is trying to rebuild the Hammers into the team they were a couple of seasons ago.

So far so good in the 2023/24 campaign, as West Ham have won three and drawn one of their opening four games, putting them level with Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool in joint second in the Premier League table.

Aguerd has been as good as anyone so far this season, and whilst teams from the Saudi Pro League are likely to come calling for the 27-year-old in future, it appears that West Ham need not worry.
