  • Former Arsenal star urges Mikel Arteta to sign World Cup duo after impressive tournaments

Former Arsenal star urges Mikel Arteta to sign World Cup duo after impressive tournaments

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has urged Mikel Arteta to sign Moroccan duo Sofyan Amrabat and Azzedine Ounahi.

With the January transfer window approaching, Arsenal will be considering reinforcing their current squad in order to stay competitive with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Despite their impressive league position, more strength in numbers could be important with the hectic fixture schedule in the new year.

Now, former Arsenal midfielder Parlour has urged Arteta to make a move for two Moroccan midfielders who impressed him during the World Cup.

“Ounahi, the No.8, he is different class. Would I take him at Arsenal? Definitely! With that performance and what I’ve seen of him in this tournament, he’s not fazed by big games, the biggest game for his country maybe ever.

He just looked so comfortable, he was always on the half-turn and looking to probe and try to get balls in behind the full-backs.

Amrabat, he’s a player, too. If I was Arsenal I’d be looking at him. Central midfield, he can get his foot in. A very good player,” said Parlour, speaking to talkSPORT (via Evening Standard).

Morocco enjoyed a sensational tournament, reaching the semi-finals before being knocked out by France. Nobody expected them to even nearly get as far as they did, with Ounahi and Amrabat playing pivotal roles in their success.

There’s no doubt both players would make a significant difference to Arsenal, but they may see their game time limited due to the form of their current squad.

Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey have been excellent this season, so it seems unlikely that a midfielder is going to come in and take their spot.

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up joining the running for the potential transfer of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha in January.

The 23-year-old has impressed in his time in La Liga, though his scoring record is not the best, and it seems there are plenty of Premier League clubs chasing him this winter.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are mulling over a possible move for Cunha, who has also been pursued by the likes of Wolves, Everton, Aston Villa and Leeds United.

Cunha could be a decent option for the Gunners right now, as Mikel Arteta has a worrying lack of depth up front, particularly after the injury to Gabriel Jesus during his time with Brazil at the World Cup.

    Matheus Cunha to Arsenal?

Arsenal fans will probably want to see their club aim a little higher than Cunha, though at the same time they’d probably be happy with him as a backup option.

Otherwise, Arteta will have only Eddie Nketiah to choose from up front for possibly a few months, which seems far from ideal for a team chasing the Premier League title.

AFC are currently five points clear at the top of the table, but the injury to Jesus could change things very quickly.

Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign French defender Evan Ndicka on a free transfer next summer.

Ndicka is set to be out of contract at the end of the season. The 23-year-old defender is a regular for Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, so you’d imagine they’d be keen to extend his current deal.

However, as it stands he will leave on a free transfer, and it now appears that he’s already reached an agreement ahead of a move next summer.

Evan Ndicka is attracting a lot of interest.

According to Il Romanista, Ndicka has reached an agreement to join Arsenal on a free transfer.

Signing a 23-year-old who regularly features for a top-flight club on a free transfer is a rarity, so it could be a smart pickup from Arsenal.

Gabriel has made a few errors this season, so Mikel Arteta could be looking to bolster his defence. Despite their excellent league position, Arsenal’s squad depth does need improvement if they want to continue to battle with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

  • Gakpo Arsenal, Bellingham PSG, Felix exit, Endrick transfer date, and more – Fabrizio Romano

Gakpo Arsenal, Bellingham PSG, Felix exit, Endrick transfer date, and more – Fabrizio Romano

Good morning guys! Enjoy today’s Daily Briefing – click here to SUBSCRIBE and get this in your email inbox five mornings a week, including for FREE on Thursdays.

Some fans have asked me about why Cody Gakpo didn’t get a big move in the summer, but it’s easy to make judgements with hindsight after his incredible start to this season and performances at the World Cup.

I’m not surprised because it’s not easy to invest €50m on a player with that track record, but he’s a top talent and many clubs were monitoring him, even if they weren’t ready to pay up for him at that time.

Arsenal were interested last March, Man United last August – and then many other Premier League clubs including Leeds.

Joao Felix on his future: “I’m completely focused on the World Cup. My agent doesn’t tell me anything about what’s going to happen, nor does he want to. I need to be focused on the now to play a great tournament.”

I can reveal that Joao Felix has chances to leave Atletico in 2023, for sure. His asking price will be more than €100m, around €120m – then it will depend on the proposals. As I recently reported, there have been several approaches, but no official offers.

Joao Felix in action for Atletico Madrid

Now it’s early to say where he could go, his agent is exploring the market and is speaking to many clubs. Felix dreams of the Premier League one day. I think he’d be perfect in any club in the world, but he desperately needs to play – he has to be a starter.

He’s had a good relationship with Atletico fans, but it’s true that his relationship with Diego Simeone has been tense.

Barcelona director Jordi Cruyff: “Frenkie de Jong is not for sale. He’s key player for us, so that time has passed. He’s here and he’s important for us. At the end last summer after Fair Play discussions he stayed here and Frenkie is really loved at Barca”.

Cruyff on Memphis Depay: “Why should we sell Depay in January if it’s difficult to sign new players because of Financial Fair Play? He’s always been a great professional. He can be really helpful. Free agent in June? We will see in the next months.”

Bayern Munich want to offer Jamal Musiala a new deal, according to director Hasan Salihamidzic: “We told Jamal’s mother and his management that we’re very happy with Jamal. We want to sit down with them after the World Cup to talk about Jamal’s further future at Bayern.”

Official. Eden Hazard has retired from international football after Belgium’s World Cup exit.

The Real Madrid forward bows out after 126 appearances and 33 goals for his country. He’s fourth on their all-time appearances list, and their second highest goal-scorer.

Josko Gvardiol continues to be the subject of much speculation, but he wants to focus on the World Cup and right after will be time for talks with top clubs. Chelsea remain keen on signing him, then many other clubs around the world are following Josko. It’s an open race, nothing is agreed.

Sofyan Amrabat’s agent Mohammed Sinouh tells me on Premier League links: “Of course, I get a lot of phone calls for Sofyan. The whole world has seen he’s the best holding midfielder of the World Cup. Sofyan is top professional, he’s focused on World Cup with Morocco.”

It’s officially confirmed – Hansi Flick will stay on as Germany manager despite a disappointing 2022 World Cup.

Jurgen Klopp was never keen on being appointed as new Germany manager. He’s 100% focused on Liverpool now, though former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was open to talking about the job.

Adrien Rabiot on his future ahead of his contract expiring in June: “Premier League attracts me. I’ve always said I’d like to play there — will it be at the end of my contract at Juve? I don’t know. I don’t have favourite team in England, no team where I’d necessarily like to play.”

Jurgen Klopp was never keen on the Germany job. He’s 100% focused on Liverpool now, already discussing new signings with the board and insisting for Jude Bellingham. Klopp and Liverpool board will also decide together on player contract situations.

Manchester United wanted Cody Gakpo in the summer and they are still in talks with people close to the player. It’s not just them, though, with other clubs also showing an interest. PSV’s plan had been to keep Gakpo this January and then sell in the summer, but if a €50m bid comes in in January there is a chance for him to leave. I’m told there is a very serious chance of a move, so keep an eye on him in the next few weeks.

Erik ten Hag is really happy with Alejandro Garnacho’s development. He’s doing very well also in training, he’s part of present and future plans. The idea of the club is to extend his contract as soon as possible, negotiations are ongoing.

Josko Gvardiol has been linked with Man Utd by some reports, but I’m not aware of any change on his future. His focus is on the World Cup and nothing is agreed with any other club. I expect several top teams from England and Spain will be in for him in 2023.

Not just Nuno Mendes, now the World Cup is also over for Danilo Pereira after his injury, with the midfielder expected to return to Paris soon.

One more blow for Portugal after the PSG left back’s injury last week.

PSG appreciate Jude Bellingham, as hinted by their president Nasser Al Khelaifi, but they know it’s going to be difficult to enter the race now. Liverpool are really pushing for Bellingham, and Man City, Chelsea and Real Madrid remain in the race.

Marco Verratti has accepted all details of Paris Saint-Germain’s new contract proposal. His lawyers have approved it and the new deal will be signed soon.

Reminder: Verratti joined PSG from Italian 2d division side Pescara in 2012… and new agreement will be valid until June 2026. A remarkable career for the Italian midfielder.

PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi on Cristiano Ronaldo: “Signing Ronaldo? The three players that we have [Messi, Neymar and Mbappe] it’s very difficult to think about Ronaldo. I wish him all the best. He’s fantastic and he’s still an amazing player.”

Cody Gakpo: “I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. If they come, I will think about it with God’s help. I thought about Man Utd last summer, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know anymore. Then Leeds arrived, I had doubts… now I wait and see.”

An important clarification: there’s no way for Real Madrid to bring Endrick to Europe in 2023. International rules only allow Endrick to arrive in July 2024, when he turns 18.

Real are prepared to invest more than €60m now as they consider Endrick a special talent, but it will still be some time before we see him at the Bernabeu.

Official, confirmed: Luis Enrique has left his position as manager of the Spanish national team.

Sofyan Amrabat has had a great World Cup and we’re now seeing more and more transfer rumours about the Morocco midfielder.

I spoke to his agent Mohammed Sinouh today and he told me that there are many calls but no advanced negotiations. Sofyan only wants to focus on the World Cup and Fiorentina will try to keep him until June.

Tottenham were close to signing him last January then Fiorentina made the deal collapse, he’s always been in the list of Antonio Conte since he was Inter Milan manager.

West Ham are making it a priority to sign a new striker in the January transfer window (Sun)

Negotiations between Wolves and Atletico Madrid for Matheus Cunha are still ongoing, progressing to find full agreement on all details. Timing will be key, as there are other clubs interested too. Felipe’s also discussed between the two clubs, as I revealed a few days ago.

Chelsea are looking to rival Arsenal and Liverpool in the race to sign Villarreal youngster Alex Baena.

Baena spent last season on loan at Girona where he learnt his trade in the second division of Spanish football. Since returning to Villarreal, Baena has become a regular in the first team, despite being just 21 years old.

However, the Spanish club may struggle to keep hold of him, with multiple Premier League sides now showing an interest in the young winger.

A report from Fichajes has claimed that Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal are all in the race to sign Baena.

With four goals in 13 appearances in La Liga this season, it’s no surprise to see some of the biggest clubs in Europe taking a look at the youngster.

With former Villarreal manager Unai Emery leaving to join Aston Villa, they’re also reportedly now interested in signing Baena, and his relationship with his former coach could give Villa an advantage.

However, with the other aforementioned clubs significantly more attractive than Villa at this moment, Baena may opt to join a Champions League club.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus is to miss the remainder of the World Cup and could miss the return of the Premier League.

Jesus was given the opportunity to impress in Brazil’s third and final group game, with Richarlison currently ahead of him in the pecking order in the front three.

Despite Jesus’ exceptional form for Arsenal this season, Richarlison’s international record speaks for itself.

However, Brazil now won’t have the option to use Jesus even from the bench, with Fabrizio Romano confirming below that the Arsenal striker is to miss the remainder of the World Cup and won’t return until January.

Despite his lack of goals, Jesus is integral to Mikel Arteta’s system. The Brazilian’s work rate and ability to bring others into play completely outweigh the lack of contributions in front of goal.

Hopefully, for Arsenal fans, the injury isn’t too bad and Jesus can recover in time for a busy schedule after the conclusion of the World Cup.

It seems unlikely that Jesus will return in time for Boxing Day, but in the New Year, the fixtures come thick and fast.

  • World Cup star advised to pick Arsenal or Liverpool over Manchester United transfer

World Cup star advised to pick Arsenal or Liverpool over Manchester United transfer

Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo is enjoying an outstanding World Cup at the moment, and it looks like he’s sure to attract plenty of transfer interest in the near future.

Gakpo has performed well for PSV at club level and is now shining brightly on the biggest stage of international football with some hugely impressive form for his country in Qatar.

Discussing his fellow Dutchman’s situation, former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel has named Liverpool or Arsenal as fine moves for the player if the opportunity arises.

Babel also mentions links with Manchester United, but it seems he feels Gakpo would be better off choosing a move to Anfield or the Emirates Stadium than to Old Trafford.

“We’re seeing a lot of interest in Gakpo around Europe and a lot of rumours about what he does next,” Babel told The Athletic. “He’s 23 and I’m curious to see if PSV can hold onto him until the end of the season.

“They are third in the Eredivisie but three points off the top. If they want to win the league they will need to keep him as he’s assisting, he’s scoring, and he’s always involved with his team’s attacks.

Cody Gakpo in action for the Netherlands

“You see him linked to clubs in England, such as Manchester United. Everyone has the right price so let’s see how he develops in the tournament. He has shown enough quality that he is ready for the next step, whether it’s in January or next summer.

“As a Liverpool fan, I would tell him to go to Liverpool if they make an approach! Arsenal would also be an incredible team for him, with the current manager and the project that they’re building. He has to follow his heart.”

Gakpo could be an important addition to the Liverpool squad right now, with Jurgen Klopp struggling since losing Sadio Mane in the summer.

Arsenal, meanwhile, lack depth behind the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, so there’s surely a role for Gakpo to come in and give them another goal threat that could help keep them at the top of the table.

Still, United also surely need a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement, and arguably an upgrade on inconsistent performers like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial.

  • Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing – duo attracted to Arsenal, Liverpool’s top transfer target + more

Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing – duo attracted to Arsenal, Liverpool’s top transfer target + more

Good morning and welcome to today’s Daily Briefing! If you like this post, you can SUBSCRIBE and get it in your email inbox five mornings a week!

There’s been fresh speculation about Mohammed Kudus, but at the moment there’s nothing concrete on this one. Kudus was close to joining Everton in the summer then deal collapsed because Ajax wanted to keep their best players after selling Gravenberch, Lisandro and Antony.

Let’s see if Liverpool decide to make more than one signing in midfield, but for the moment I’m sure Jude Bellingham remains their top priority.

Lionel Messi scored his 8th World Cup goal yesterday as Argentina beat Mexico 2-0. A fine strike, and an important response after the shock defeat against Saudi Arabia, and here’s what it meant to his family watching the game…

I get asked by Arsenal fans by a lot of players, and, especially at the moment, there is a lot of buzz about Mykhaylo Mudryk, and still with Youri Tielemans.

I’m sure both players are attracted by Arsenal, as they were in the summer and even more now after their superb start to the season.

For Mudryk there are four or five clubs keen on signing him, including Arsenal of course.

For Tielemans, it depends on conditions of free deal; Arsenal always had his name in the list but talks are not concrete yet.

Joao Felix is a special talent, but we know his situation with Atletico Madrid has not been easy. He’s had a good relationship with the club and the fans, but there are tensions with Diego Simeone. This is why he’s now open to leaving Atletico Madrid in 2023 – we’ll see if it’s in January or in the summer.

It’s not true that Felix has asked to leave, but he’s open to a move. Atletico Madrid invested a lot of money in the young forward, so the board still want to protect the player and see if he can make it at the club. It also means the next club will have to make an important offer to persuade them to sell Felix.

His agent Jorge Mendes is now trying to understand if any clubs will come up with the money for Felix. Manchester United asked about him in the summer, but then they never made a bid because Atletico considered him untouchable. Chelsea have scouted him, while Paris Saint-Germain could also be an option. There is no negotiation yet, but the player’s future is open so he’s one to watch.

Xavi is very happy with Sergio Busquets. He’s convinced he can do very well for the club for one more season; but it also depends on Busquets. A decision will be made in 2023 and not now. There’s a chance for him to continue for one more year as Xavi will push for that, but Busquets has also proposals from MLS.

Barcelona manager Xavi on Endrick: “We’ve been talking with Endrick’s father and also with the player. I explained them the project. We want him, he’s a top talent. Endrick is the kind of player we need. I hope he joins Barca. It’s up to him to decide.”

A reminder of this smart business by Benfica – they only paid €10m plus €8m add-ons to sign Enzo Fernandez last summer. He has already had a fantastic Champions League group stage and is now impressing for Argentina at the World Cup. Still only 21 years old

Nothing has changed on the Jude Bellingham deal. Liverpool consider him their main target, and contact has already started — but Real Madrid, Manchester City and also Chelsea remain in the race. Nothing will be decided now. Borussia Dortmund will only negotiate on price in 2023.

Youssoufa Moukoko on his contract expiring in June: “I feel so comfortable at BVB, I love the club. I’d really love to stay at Borussia Dortmund. I want to understand what kind of project and perspective the club will offer me, it’s an important point.”

Neymar has provided pictures of his injured ankle on Instagram…

Celtic have reached verbal agreement with Montreal to sign Alistair Johnston on a permanent deal, now waiting for final details. Johnston’s contract will be discussed in order to get the deal done and sealed.

Chelsea will unveil Christopher Vivell as their new technical director soon, never in doubt — after Joe Shields, Lawrence Stewart and Paul Winstanley. Chelsea also remain in the process to appoint a new sporting director but it’s still not decided, it’s expected to happen in 2023.

Joao Felix has been monitored by Chelsea, and his future is up in the air due to issues at Atletico Madrid. He’s not been at his best under Diego Simeone, so we’ll see if he moves in January or in the summer, and if any club pays his asking price.

I can understand frustrations with how England played against the US, but I think is so easy to judge from our own sofa.

Being England manager with so many top players to choose from is different. For sure, I hope to see Phil Foden on the pitch soon as he’s a top player and deserves to play more, but we shouldn’t forget the other big players in this squad.

England remain in a strong position overall, so I think Gareth Southgate deserves patience and trust with what he’s doing. Still, let’s see if he’s tempted to change things for the Wales game.

Kylian Mbappe has now scored 7 World Cup goals – he’s just one behind Lionel Messi, and still only 23 years old.

Liverpool still have Jude Bellingham as their top target, and contacts have already started. However, nothing concrete will happen until Borussia Dortmund decide their price in 2023.

The Reds have also been linked with Mohammed Kudus, but at the moment there’s nothing concrete on this one. Kudus was close to joining Everton in the summer, but then deal collapsed because Ajax wanted to keep their best players after so many other sales.

Let’s see if Liverpool decide to make more than one signing in midfield, but for the moment I’m sure Bellingham remains their top priority.

Jonathan David is a player I really rate, and I’ve said he could be a good option for Manchester United. He’s now being linked with the club, but how reliable is the story?

It’s normal for top players to be linked with Man Utd, but at the moment there are no negotiations ongoing for David. He’s well known by United scouts of course but there are no talks ongoing at the moment. I’m sure he will continue to attract interest from many top clubs.

Newcastle have reached an agreement to hire Paul Midgley as Head of Youth Recruitment. He will be joining from Manchester City where he was regional scout.

An agreement is in place and the deal is done as Newcastle want to improve all areas of the club.

Robert Lewandowski finally has his first World Cup goal – and you can see how much this meant to him!

“I’m aware that this may be my last World Cup,” Lewandowski said after the game. “Already during the anthem, singing the national anthem, I felt the emotions inside me. I wanted not only to be remembered for being at the World Cup, but for scoring goals there too. I always fought hard for a goal at the World Cup and today, I managed it.”

Kylian Mbappe made headlines earlier in the season as he was unhappy with certain aspects of his situation at Paris Saint-Germain, but for now he is only focused on the World Cup.

Really, there is nothing else going on and nothing will happen in January as PSG guarantee he’s not for sale. In the summer, the situation will be clarified but now his full focus is on the World Cup.

Real Madrid are really pushing in the last few days to sign Endrick. They have a good relationship with the Palmeiras wonderkid’s agents, and they want a top striker for the future. They will need a long-term replacement for Karim Benzema, and Endrick is considered a really important player for the future.

We know that PSG have had a bid rejected, and Chelsea are still there, but Real Madrid are stepping up their interest.

Mateo Tanlongo has now signed the contract as new Sporting player. It’s all done – the Argentinian midfielder will join the Portuguese club from Rosario Central in January.

Tanlongo will become a Sporting player on a contract running until June 2027, it’s sealed and here we go confirmed.

Watford are planning to open talks on new contract with the talented winger Adrian Blake. He scored an hattrick for U21s in PL Cup yesterday, Watford are planning to promote him to their first team

Blake is due to be out of contract in the summer and clubs in the Premier League are monitoring him.

Arsenal looking to re-sign former player Ismael Bennacer and are willing to offer Thomas Partey as part of a swap deal.

Bennacer played for Arsenal for two years between 2015 and 2017, before making the move to Italy. Now, Bennacer currently plays for AC Milan, and there’s no doubt he’s developed more than Arsenal would have expected or they may not have let him go so easily.

However, a report from Calcio Mercato Web has claimed that Arsenal are willing to offer Partey as part of a swap deal to bring Bennacer back to North London.

Bennacer in action for AC Milan.

Losing a key player in Partey wouldn’t make an awful lot of sense. However, his injury record could be a concern for Mikel Arteta, so cashing in on him and bringing in a less injury-prone midfielder might be a smart idea.

As good of an addition Bennacer would be to Arsenal, bringing him in whilst sacrificing Partey is unlikely to be in their plans. Signing Bennacer to provide competition alongside Partey would be an ideal situation.

Arsenal look to have been given a positive piece of transfer news today as Palmeiras midfielder Danilo appears to have dropped a pretty clear hint over his future.

The talented 21-year-old looks an outstanding prospect and was a target for the Gunners back in the summer, according to Fabrizio Romano in a recent edition of his exclusive CaughtOffside column.

It now looks like Arsenal could be active in January and be given the funds to sign a new midfielder, according to the Evening Standard, who quote Danilo as saying he’s ready to play at a more competitive level.

The Brazilian also says there will likely be talks over his future soon, though he didn’t want to personally comment on the situation too much.

“I see myself mature enough to be able to play in any competition in the world, I’m ready,” Danilo told UOL Esporte, as translated by the Evening Standard.

    Danilo in action for Palmeiras

“[I am ready] because Palmeiras helped me a lot, from the base, with [director] Joao Paulo [Sampaio], and I kept my mentality strong with the arrival of Abel (the Palmeiras manager).

“But I prefer not to get involved with these transfer issues. I told my manager to only talk to me if it’s the right thing. Then we sit down and talk to Palmeiras and decide what’s best for everyone.”

Arsenal lack depth behind Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, so it surely makes sense to bring in someone like Danilo who can help them maintain their strong start to the season, which has surprisingly seen them take a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta’s side seem to be ahead of schedule in terms of their project, but they must surely be flexible and ensure they don’t blow this huge chance to win their first title since 2003/04.
