    Djokovic to take some stopping in New York

    The season’s fourth and final Grand Slam, the US Open, returns this week and in the men’s tournament it is the world’s top two Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic who once again dominate the outright betting.

    Djokovic was taken down by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final last month but the Serbian rarely stays down for long and can react by winning the US Open.

    The 36-year-old has won both the Australian Open and French Open this season and came a win away from making it three Grand Slam titles on the spin in London.

    The Serbian was pushed to his limits in the Wimbledon final, though, eventually losing a five-set epic against his Spanish counterpart.

    Not a lot separates the players and they unsurprisingly head the betting for this year’s hard-court major in New York.

    Alcaraz is defending champion at the US Open but last year did not have to compete with Djokovic, who missed the Grand Slam, and he could be in for a tougher time of it this time around.

    Djokovic showed he meant business when beating Alcaraz in the final of the Cincinnati Masters as part of his preparation earlier this month and he has since taken a couple of days off to ensure he’s fresh for New York.

    Although his last title there came back in 2018, Djokovic has won the US Open on three occasions in his career and he will be hungry for more as he looks to draw level with Margaret Court on a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

    And working in his favour this year is a softer draw than Alcaraz with Djokovic set to avoid Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev in his half of the draw, so back the veteran Serbian to win the US Open at 6/5.

    The market suggests it is a straight toss-up between Djokovic and Alcaraz for US Open glory this year but those after a bigger price could do worse than back Sinner at 14/1.

    Italian Sinner, 22, has come a long way this year, winning 41 of his 53 matches on the ATP tour and picking up two titles along the way.

    One of those came on the hard courts at the ATP Toronto earlier in the month as he saw off the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul and Alex De Minaur on his way to the title.

    Sinner also looked in good shape at Wimbledon, reaching the semi-finals only to lose to Djokovic, who he avoids in his half of the draw this time around.

    It is a big ask of Sinner to go the distance but the lack of expectation behind the Italian could work in his favour and he is a decent double-figure selection.

    To put things into perspective, teams had lost 2,229 consecutive games when trailing by at least 13 points in the final two minutes between Week 9 of 2002 (the week after the Browns’ collapse against the Bears) and Week 1 of the current season.

    The Browns were devastated, having blown a chance to go 2-0 for the first time since 1993. With 1:55 remaining, Chubb scored his third touchdown, a 12-yard run, to make the score 30-17. He should, however, have stopped short of the end zone. If he had done so, the Browns would have been able to run out the clock because the Jets had no timeouts left.

    The Jets stated that Chubb’s mental error surprised them and triggered their emotions. The Browns were humiliated. Coach Kevin Stefanski accepted responsibility.

    Norrie arrived in New York in good form after he advanced to the semi-finals in Cincinnati, where he lost to eventual champion Borna Coric. The four-time tour-level titlist is up to No. 11 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin as he looks to finish the season strongly and qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in November.

    In a tight first set, Norrie recovered from squandering two set points at 5-3 and a break advantage as he regained his focus to eventually clinch the opener after 49 minutes when Rune hit a forehand long. The seventh seed forced the Dane into errors in the second set with his watertight groundstrokes before he committed just one unforced error in the third set to race away to victory.

    Rune, who is fourth in the Pepperstone Live Race To Milan, was aiming to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the second time after he enjoyed a dream run to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in June.

    In a match full of stunning shotmaking, it was Alcaraz who produced the heavier blows. He showcased great footwork to dictate with his forehand, while he scampered around the baseline to hang in points, surviving a Coria revival in the third set to triumph after two hours and 11 minutes.

    With his victory, Alcaraz has improved to 46-9 on the season, having lifted four tour-level trophies, including ATP Masters 1000 crowns in Miami and Madrid. He has moved level with Stefanos Tsitsipas (also 46) for the most tour-level wins in 2022.

    “It has been a great year for me. I think I am playing very well. I am so happy to be the player who now has the most victories in the year,” Alcaraz said. “But I have to look forward and stay the same player and go for it.”

    The 2021 Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals champion, who is currently third in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, will next face American Jenson Brooksby.

    The 21-year-old downed Cincinnati champion Borna Coric 6-4, 7-6(10), 6-1 in three hours and eight minutes to reach the third round for the second time.

    The home favourite saved seven set points in the second set, before he raced through the third set in front of a lively crowd. Brooksby, who reached his third tour-level final in Atlanta in July, has never played Alcaraz.

    Murray had won just one of four matches in the North American hard-court swing coming into the US Open, but he downed 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets in the opening round and Wednesday’s win against Nava improved the 35-year-old’s record at Flushing Meadows to 48-14. Murray struck 11 fewer winners than World No. 203 Nava (22 to 33), but the Briton believes his trademark defence is just as much of a weapon as his ability to hit winners this fortnight in New York.

    “Physcially this is the best I’ve felt in the last few years. My movement is by far the best it has been in a long time. That’s always been a really important part of my game, and nowadays especially with a lot of the guys now hitting a huge ball, you need to be able to defend well. I feel like I’m doing that just now, I’m getting closer to where I want to be and hopefully I can have a deep run here.”

    The Briton will next face 13th seed Matteo Berrettini or Frenchman Hugo Grenier as he seeks his first fourth-round appearance at a major since Wimbledon 2017.

    IGT Expands Footprint Despite Financial Challenges

    At the beginning of August, IGT posted its financial results for the second quarter of 2022. Despite being one of the powerhouses in the sector, the company recorded a slight decline in its revenues. All segments seemed to underperform as the company failed to see a major improvement in its standings.

    Luckily, the decline is very slight but the company also recorded some concerning losses. Despite earning a net income of $300 million in Q2 2021, the company now had a net loss of $4 million.

    Although IGT has some struggles, it continues to improve its presence in the United States and beyond. At the beginning of August, the company inked a partnership deal with Nisqually Red Wind Casino, a Washington-based tribal venue. The renowned supplier powered the casino with sports betting, allowing it to engage sports fans in the state.

    In other action, Matteo Berrettini bounced back from a disappointing first-round exit in Cincinnati by overcoming Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

    The Italian, who soared to the semi-finals in New York in 2019, fired 26 winners and did not face a break point to triumph after one hour and 58 minutes.     Nine-time tour-level titlist Ruud will face Tim van Rijthoven in the second round after the Dutchman saved seven match points to edge Chinese qualifier Zhang Zhizhen 3-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 6-1, 6-4.

    Zhang’s defeat left Wu Yibing alone in the draw trying to become the first Chinese man to win a singles main-draw match at a Grand Slam in the Open Era, and the 22-year-old achieved the feat in spectacular style by taking out 31st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.

    “It’s happy and exciting but still more matches to come,” said Wu, who was the boys’ singles champion at Flushing Meadows in 2017. “The third set, I don’t know if he was hurting or something, I just tried to make all the balls and tried to stay in the game, not thinking about winning or losing. That’s why I guess I didn’t show much emotions. I feel pretty calm.”

    Wu’s reward for his quickfire one-hour, 33-minute win is a second-round clash with home wild card Ben Shelton or Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges.

Judging by the recent data released by the Commission, the total betting handle for the week until August 21 hit $200.1 million, while mobile sports wagering gross gaming revenue (GGR) hit $24.4 million.

    When compared to the $197 million in betting handle reported a week earlier and the $21.1 million in mobile betting GGR, the recent result marks a slight increase. However, the $200.1 million in betting handle marks the first week with a result above $200 million after a decrease that was observed in the last month and a half. What’s more, the mobile betting GGR for the week until August 21 marks the best result in the last month.

    Fanduel, DraftKings and Caesars Report Strong Betting Handle

    It’s no surprise that the premier sportsbook operator FanDuel reported the highest betting handle for the week until August 21. Overall, the operator reported a betting handle of $85.5 million, which translates to a total of $12 million in mobile sports wagering GGR for the period.

    The second-highest betting handle was reported by DraftKings. The operator’s betting handle for the week until August 21 hit $55.3 million, which brought DraftKings $6.6 million in GGR for the period. The third-highest betting handle for the week ending August 21 was reported by Caesars Sportsbook. For the period, the operator reported $26.9 million in betting handle. This means that Caesars Sportsbook’s GGR for the week was $3 million.

    BetMGM was another mobile sportsbook operator in New York that reported a strong betting handle and GGR for the week until August 21. The sportsbook’s total betting handle for the period was $17.1 million, while its mobile betting GGR hit $2.1 million. According to the State Gaming Commission, Rush Street Interactive reported $6.8 million in betting handle for the week until August 21, while its GGR was $545,000.

    It was back in January this year when New York launched its mobile and online sports betting market. In its first few months of operations, the mobile betting market in the state proved it holds significant potential and surpassed betting handle and GGR records set in other US states where the activity has been legal for years. Currently, brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are subject to a 10% tax rate, while online sportsbooks pay 51% tax.
