Wu Becomes First Chinese ATP Tour Titlist In History With Dallas Triumph

Wu Yibing came back from the brink to make history Sunday at the Dallas Open, where the fast-rising 23-year-old saved four championship points before downing John Isner 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12) to become the first Chinese player to lift an ATP Tour trophy.

Before this week, no Chinese man had ever reached a tour-level final in the Open Era or defeated an opponent in the Top 10 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. Wu achieved both of those in one go with his semi-final victory against World No. 8 Taylor Fritz in Dallas, and he continued his history-making run in Sunday’s final with a milestone victory for tennis in his country.

“I made history here for my country and for my home,” said Wu at the trophy ceremony. “I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”

After a bright start, Wu appeared to have faded in the face of a trademark serving barrage from Isner at the indoor ATP 250 event in Texas. The American held championship point on his opponent’s serve at 6-5, 30/40 in the second set, but Wu kept his cool to recover before sealing a historic victory in a nerve-wracking deciding-set tie-break.

Wu forced Isner to push a forehand long to clinch a third-set tie-break in which the first 22 points went with serve. He completed a remarkable two-hour, 59-minute win despite Isner firing 44 aces in the match.

“It’s a tough one to lose,” said Isner, who is now 16-15 in tour-level finals. “I don’t know how many match points I had, I’m sure it’s a lot. I swear I thought I won the match a few times. I know he hit one ball… It had to be [on] the back sixteenth of the line on one of the points… Sports can be brutal. I had match point in the second set too.

“It’s like he plays every point the same, so definitely no nerves,” added Isner when asked about Wu’s performance. “He gets a ball to hit, he hits it, and on this court it’s hard to hit him a shot he is uncomfortable with… He is an unbelievable ballstriker and a very good talent.”

Even after falling a set behind, Wu continued to strike aggressively from the baseline in his maiden tour-level meeting with Isner. His combination of power and accuracy brought him 41 winners, including seven aces, while the Chinese also won all 13 points he played at the net.

Wu, who did not compete on the ATP Tour from March 2019 to January 2022 due to a series of injuries, had notched just six tour-level wins prior to this week. Yet he showed no sign of nerves throughout his run, during which he defeated Michael Mmoh, third seed Denis Shapovalov, Adrian Mannarino, top seed Fritz, and Isner.

On Monday, Wu became just the second Chinese player to crack the Top 100 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. Now he will rise to a career-high World No. 58 just one week later.

Isner, who pledged to donate $100 to the Isner Family Foundation for each ace he hit this week, finished the tournament with 138 aces, raising $13,800 for needy children in the Dallas area.

A month after Real Madrid’s victory in the Clasico, in La Liga (3-1), the Merengues found FC Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, in Riyadh. Winners of Valencia in the semi-finals, Real Madrid hoped, once again, to get ahead of their best enemy, who had also qualified with difficulty against Real Betis, on penalties (2-2), in the semi-finals. For this final, Dembélé, Gavi, Pedri and Lewandowski challenged Vinicius Jr, Benzema, Valverde and Camavinga.

Quickly, it was FC Barcelona who took the lead in this meeting with a strike from Lewandowski on the post of Courtois (12th). And a few minutes later, after a nice collective movement, Lewandowski, served at the entrance to the Real Madrid area, shifted Gavi to the left of the goal to open the scoring (1-0, 34th). The non-existent Madrid had the opportunity to open the scoring, but Benzema’s header went wide (14th). Apart from that, Ancelotti’s men did not exist and Lewandowski doubled the bet, served by a sublime Gavi (2-0, 45th).

    Real Madrid did not exist

While we were waiting for an awakening from Benzema and his teammates, Real did not wake up and were close to 3-0. Dembélé missed his duel against Courtois (52nd), before the Belgian goalkeeper pushed back the shot from Lewandowski (54th). But this Sunday evening, led by a very great Gavi, Barça was untouchable. The young 18-year-old midfielder crossed hard towards Pedri for the 3-0 goal (65th). And even when the Catalan defense faltered, ter Stegen was there to save his people (79th). At the very end of the match, Benzema could only reduce the score (3-1, 90th + 5).

Norsk Tipping Reduces Ads Following Triumph over the Black Market

Norway’s national lottery operator, Norsk Tipping, announced it will no longer promote its sports betting services on TV. This decision comes soon after the country’s major broadcasters vowed to stop promoting unlicensed operators.

    Norsk Tipping to Reduce Ads

Earlier this year, the Norwegian Media Authority, the country’s media regulator, found out that the five biggest local TV operators are broadcasting ads for unlicensed gaming companies. As per the Broadcasting Act of 2021, the authority ordered TV channels to stop promoting illegal products. These orders applied to Discovery Network, Eurosport Norway, FEM, MAX and VOX, which were all found guilty of breaching Norway’s advertisement regulations. The said TV channels eventually complied, thus reducing locals’ exposure to illegal gambling content.

Now that the major broadcasters have stopped promoting such offerings, Norsk Tipping pulled its commercials down from TV. The lottery operator believes that there is no need to over-promote gaming content now that there is no competition from the black market.

In addition, the lottery operator plans to scale down its overall marketing campaigns and save money. For example, the monopoly plans to stop promoting sports betting offerings via SMS.

    The Operator Will Remain Competitive

Tonje Sagstuen, communications director at Norsk Tipping, said there is no longer a need for the operator to maintain such a high level of visibility. Now that unlicensed operators will no longer promote their products on the biggest TV channels, Norsk Tipping will be able to reallocate its resources.

Norsk Tipping will not stop advertising entirely but will not advertise more than necessary, Sagstuen explained. The operator will keep enough ads to incentivize people to pick the legal offer but will not flood customers with adverts.

Sagstuen also noted that the problem with unlicensed operators is that many of them promote highly-addictive verticals such as online casinos and online sports betting. Seeing the harm those verticals cause, Norsk Tipping plans to reduce its focus on such games and instead promote less dangerous products. Sagstuen noted that lottery games continue to enjoy a lot of popularity while being far less addictive than other offerings.

Sagstuen warned that unlicensed operators will likely seek new ways to promote their products now that they have been barred from TV. He said that the black market may double down on advertising through social media, podcasts and email. Because of this, Norsk Tipping must remain competitive and ready to face its unlicensed competitors.
