Football Bet of the Day: Thursday

Aston Villa have a five-goal advantage over Hibernian as the two teams lock horns at Villa Park for the second leg of their Europa Conference League play-off on Thursday evening. There is a market to look at in this one which we feel offers good value so we have chosen it as our bet of the day.

Unai Emery’s side blew away Hibernian in Edinburgh last Thursday as they ran out 5-0 winners in the first leg. Striker Ollie Watkins netted a hat-trick as Leon Bailey and Douglas Luiz also got on the scoresheet.

Villa and Emery may feel that the job is already done and that they will be going on a European tour this season. This could see the Spaniard make several personnel changes for the lineup at Villa Park for the second leg but they should still have too much quality for now manager-less Hibernian, following Lee Johnson’s departure at the weekend.

There is a lot of buzz surrounding the West Midlands club this year as to what they can achieve under Emery and they have had a strong start in the Premier League, winning their last two matches against Burnley and Everton, scoring seven goals across the two victories. In their 5-0 and 4-0 triumphs over Hibernian and Everton respectively, Villa won both halves of the two matches which is what makes this market seem like a shrewd selection for the second leg, even if key players are rested.

Villa boast a lot of quality within their ranks with the likes of Youri Tielemens, Nicolo Zaniolo having to settle for cameo appearances thus far. Emery will likely give the midfield pair a run out at Villa Park and the hosts should still be able to get by their Scottish opponents with relative ease. That is why the 21/20 price for Villa to win both halves again offers great value.

The Ravens (4-3 SU, 2-4-1 ATS) have opened their season with notable wins over the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals. Their three losses were from highly competitive teams, including the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants. They did benefit from the return of RB Gus Edwards, who was critical in the Ravens’ Week 7 23-20 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

The Buccaneers (3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS) have been relying on their defense to earn them the few wins they have this season. They started strong in the first couple of weeks, but have since slid to 1-4. In their Week 7 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, QB Tom Brady had a particularly rough outing, throwing 49 passes with zero touchdowns. Mike Evans added fuel to the fire when he dropped a nice easy pass that should have been a touchdown in the first quarter.

Kansas is cheering at the prospect of launching its own sports betting industry. In fact, there’s no prospect – there is a certainty. On Friday, Kansas governor Laura Kelly confirmed that the state will begin a soft launch this Thursday, with mobile sports betting to follow on September 8, or next Thursday.

Retail and Mobile Sports Betting Coming to Kansas

The State Lottery has already confirmed the companies that have obtained sports betting licenses and have been cleared to launch. As per Senate Bill 84, each state-operated casino will have both in-person sportsbooks and up to three sports betting apps. There are currently four casinos in the Sunflower State.

Hollywood Casino in Kansas City has teamed up with Barstool Sports to offer both in-person sportsbook and mobile sports betting experiences. Meanwhile, Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane will work closely with FanDuel to provide both a retail and interactive wagering experience.

There is also Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City which has struck a partnership with DraftKings and is currently awaiting regulatory approval for the launch of Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG), a DraftKings subsidiary.

Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg though seems to have the most online sports betting entities teaming up with the company, with BetMGM, PointsBet, and Caesars all opting for this property. Kansas is the latest state in the US to have been cleared and is now launching in the re-regulated sports gambling market.

This is a fortunate development because, even though the state sports a small population, it’s still good for Kansas to make sure that it offers residents sufficient betting options at home.

The fact that Senate Bill 84 offers both remote and land-based betting options indicates that there has been a deeper change in lawmakers’ perception of the industry, one unimpeded by old-fashioned ideas such as “in-person registration.”

Still, there has been some pushback, particularly from the Attorney General’s office which spoke of “significant issues.” Despite all of this, though, Kansas is well-tipped to launch its sports gambling industry without further issues and on time for the first NFL games which will start on Friday, September 9 with the Los Angeles Rams taking on the Buffalo Bills.
