Manchester United are reportedly keen to recruit a second, more experienced, striker in the January transfer window to aid Rasmus Hojlund’s development.

Despite signing for the Red Devils from Atalanta for £72 million (Sky Sports) in the summer, Hojlund, 20, has struggled to get himself among the goals.

The young forward, although playing well in the 12 appearances he has made, has managed to find the back of the net on just three occasions so far.

Consequently, eager to share the striker’s workload, United’s recruitment team, according to the Daily Mail, are set to bring in a new forward once the January window opens.

There are thought to be three players on the Red Devils’ shortlist. Brentford’s Ivan Toney, although currently serving a betting-related ban, is expected to leave the Bees in the coming windows. Multiple clubs are linked with United the latest to join the race.

Porto’s Mehdi Taremi is another option with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen the Red Devils’ third and final mid-season target.

West Ham striker told he should be worried after Mohammed Kudus signing

It’s not quite all change at West Ham United at present, but the addition of Mohammed Kudus and others during the summer transfer window has certainly shaken things up a bit.

There’s nothing like some gold standard signings to up everyone’s game, with players that may have been coasting previously all of a sudden getting worried for their place in the starting XI.

Despite losing their two matches against Liverpool and Man City, David Moyes and his Hammers squad can be pleased with the way in which they’ve started the 2023/24 campaign.

After six games, the east Londoners are in seventh place but only five points behind Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton and Hove Albion in third.

Next up is Sheffield United at the London Stadium, with the Blades fresh from an 8-0 battering against Newcastle.

Coincidentally, it’s the Magpies they face in the following game, and in the wake of Newcastle’s expected Champions League epic against Paris Saint-Germain, the fixture calendar might just be working in West Ham’s favour.

It will be interesting to see who Moyes starts with over the next few games, as journalist Paul Brown has noted that one particular Hammers star should be looking over his shoulder.

“I think if you’re Said Benrahma, you should be spurred on really. It should show you that you are going to need to find some consistency and perform every week to stay in this team. And I think that raises standards across the board,” he said to Give Me Sport.

“It’s not just Benrahma who should be worried about the fact that players like Mohamed Kudus are coming to the club, I think it lifts everyone when you bring in players of quality and the squad has a bit more depth now than it did last season.”

It’s about time that the standards were raised in east London, and with money still to spend after the sale of Declan Rice in the summer, January could see even more competition for places.

With just five goals so far in the 2023/24 Premier League season, Fulham remain one of the lowest scorers in the division.

It’s fair to speculate that had they still had Aleksandar Mitrovic in the side, their output in terms of goals might’ve been significantly higher at this stage.

Despite their poor showing in front of goal, the Cottagers are in a reasonable enough 10th position and with seven points, just five behind Brighton and Hove Albion in fifth.

Whilst they clearly miss their former centre-forward, they were never a one-man team and are going about proving exactly that.

It’s been revealed too that they were willing to pay €15m for a player that is currently European football’s hottest striking property.

Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy was the subject of an enquiry from the west Londoners as they sought to replace Mitrovic, but as Sky Sports Germany note, the player himself decided against the move.

His 10 goals in 2023/24 per WhoScored, make him statistically better than Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe at the time of writing.

No doubt that Marco Silva will be rueing the fact that the player couldn’t be persuaded to move to Craven Cottage given how well he has begun the current campaign.

Depending how well they’re doing by the opening of the January transfer window, there’s nothing stopping Fulham making another approach though.

Once a player knows they’re really wanted that can often change their minds, and you never say never in football.

Shearer urges Newcastle to complete the signing of £90m striker

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has made it clear he would like to see his old club sign Napoli forward Victor Osimhen.

The Nigeria international, valued at £90million or possibly even more, has established himself as one of the finest attacking players in Europe in recent times and seems likely to earn a big move sooner rather than later.

Shearer is a big fan of Osimhen and thinks Newcastle could do well to make him their next statement signing to really try to take them to the next level.

“Who would you like to see? When I was at Man City we signed Robinho who took us to the next level, who would you like to see? Osimhen maybe from Napoli?” Micah Richards asked Shearer on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“Yeah, they already have Wilson and Isak, but I don’t think you can ever have too many up top, you can change and rotate, he would have been a very good signing yeah,” Shearer replied.

“They’ve done it very differently than we thought, a more measured way rather than going out and buying that big name.”

Crystal Palace eyeing Leicester City striker with 56 goals in 210 appearances

Roy Hodgson clearly isn’t happy with the way that his Crystal Palace strikers have begun the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The elder statesman amongst the Premier League manager has seen his side draw a blank against Arsenal and narrowly beat Sheffield United on the opening day.

With such a vibrant, attacking side at his disposal, one goal scored in two games isn’t enough to get Hodgson excited, and with nine days left of the transfer window it appears that the south Londoners are going to do their upmost to bring in a striker who has 56 goals in 210 appearances according to the Daily Mail.

In order for there to be room for Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho to join, however, the Selhurst Park outfit must first get rid of Jean-Philippe Mateta say the Daily Mail.

It’s believed that RB Leipzig could be interested in taking the player, though nothing has been confirmed at this stage.

Without the guile, power and pace of Wilfried Zaha, Palace seem to have lost a lot of their ‘zip’ in attack, and that could be a worry for Hodgson.

Therefore, any more for Iheanacho isn’t just strategic but necessary.

There’s plenty of time to secure the player’s future, though the sooner Mateta agrees to join Leipzig – if indeed he wants to – the better.

Romelu Lukaku is pictured in a Chelsea tracksuit at Cobham as the Belgian striker tries to force through Juventus swap deal with Dusan Vlahovic

Romelu Lukaku is back at Chelsea’s Cobham training base with his future up in the air ahead of the new season.

The Belgian striker was pictured alongside a Chelsea Under-12 player in an Instagram post wearing a club tracksuit as he keeps up his fitness levels.

Lukaku, 30, isn’t in the plans of new Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino but so far hasn’t been able to secure a move away having spent last season on loan at Inter Milan.

Reports in Italy suggest Chelsea are in talks with Juventus over a player-plus-cash deal for their striker Dusan Vlahovic, with the transfer fee around £35million.

However, Pochettino reportedly isn’t convinced by Vlahovic’s qualities and is unwilling to sanction the deal.

Lukaku is believed to be training individually at Cobham alongside a personal fitness coach and away from the rest of the Chelsea squad.

A return to Inter appears unlikely despite 14 goals in 37 appearances during last season’s loan spell, which featured a run to the Champions League final.

Lukaku was criticised for missing a number of key chances after coming off the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

A permanent move to Inter collapsed with one ultras group labelling Lukaku a ‘mercenary’ who has ‘betrayed’ the club by considering a move to bitter rivals Juventus.

He was linked with a move to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League but wasn’t keen on moving there.

Juventus fans, meanwhile, unfurled a banner opposing his transfer there. The Curva Sud ultras group held up the banner reading ‘Lukaku stay in Milan, we already have a second goalkeeper.’

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of striker Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central in a move believed to be worth around £12million.

The 19-year-old has agreed a five-year contract and the transfer includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

He is Ange Postecoglou’s second signing of the day after defender Micky van de Ven, who completed his £43m move from Wolfsburg earlier.

Part of the Argentina U20 team, Veliz was also a target for Nottingham Forest, but it is Spurs who have secured his services after opening talks last week.

The young forward broke into Rosario Central’s team in 2021 and has gone from strength to strength since, bagging 11 goals in 23 outings this season.

The deals bring Tottenham’s total number of incomings this summer to six.

Last week they brought in Blackburn defender Ashley Phillips on a five-year deal for £2m.

That followed the signings of James Maddison for £45m, Dejan Kulusevski for £25m, and Manor Solomon on a free.

The club are set play to Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy tonight and it has emerged that Harry Kane will not take part.

He has urged a quick resolution to the saga involving himself, Spurs, and his suitors Bayern Munich.

Tottenham rejected a ‘final’ bid of £86m from the Bavarian giants on Monday but it is understood that they will return with another offer.

The 30-year-old has set a personal deadline of Sunday, when Spurs meet Brentford in their Premier League opener, for the clubs to thrash out any deal.

He will commit to Spurs for the year ahead if a transfer is not completed by then.

Leeds United are worried they could lose star forward Wilfried Gnonto this summer after just one season with the Yorkshire club.

The 19-year-old joined the Premier League club from FC Zurich last summer for a bargain £3.8m deal but having impressed on his debut season for the Whites, clubs such as Chelsea are interested in luring him away during the upcoming window.

According to TalkSPORT, the West London club are pushing – along with AC Milan and Juventus – to sign Gnonto and with a contract at Elland Road until 2027, Leeds are under no pressure to sell the Italian star.

The forward has played 17 times in the Premier League this season for Leeds, scoring two goals and assisting a further three. The Yorkshire club will make a significant profit should they sell the Italian this summer but they will likely try their best to keep him unless they are relegated from the English top flight.

Jason Cundy thinks that Chelsea have to sign Ivan Toney in order to combat the striker issues that have plagued them over the past few years.

The Blues have failed to truly replace Diego Costa since he left the club in 2017, the Spaniard being the last man to score 20 league goals for the Blues and former Chelsea midfielder Cundy thinks that Brentford striker Toney needs to be wearing blue next season.

Toney is the Premier League 3rd top scorer this season behind Harry Kane and Erling Haaland and Cundy thinks the Englishman could be the best option for Graham Potter’s team.

Do we need a centre forward? Yes, we do. Ivan Toney has his issues off the field with what’s happening with the betting situation he’s been charged with so let’s wait and see what happens there, but he’s a Chelsea centre-forward to me.

Toney celebrates scoring against Fulham at the start of the month

The way he is, the way he looks, the way he plays. We need a platform. We need a rugged, hard, clever, intelligent footballer up front and he ticks a lot of boxes.”

The 27-year old has been in hot form for the Bees this season, scoring 16 league goals as Brentford sit 8th, seven points of 4th place and the chances are, plenty of teams will want to try and lure the England international away from the G-Tech Community Stadium.

However, of all the teams in the Premier League and in Europe, Chelsea look like they could benefit the most from a player of Toney’s quality, especially with their striker struggles over the past half a decade.
