Premier League club looking at Palace ace who wants Champions League football

Crystal Palace can consider themselves unlucky to have lost a tense London derby against Tottenham last time out, though it’s perhaps the inability to get across the line in the biggest games that has seen one their players signal an intent to leave the club.

At present, Roy Hodgson’s side find themselves in 13th place, amongst a clutch of clubs on 12 points.

They are only five points from sixth placed Newcastle United, and it’s the Magpies that are interested in wantaway defender, Joachim Andersen, according to TeamTalk.

Whilst it’s understandable that every player wants to better themselves, the Eagles have shown under Hodgson that, on their day, they are as capable as anyone else.

Perhaps Newcastle’s fast moving and upward trajectory is what is attracting the 28-year-old and, rather than let the train leave the station, he wants to hop aboard, even if he’s putting the ball in Palace’s court.

“It is clear that this summer I will be 28 years old. It is limited how much money clubs will spend on a 28-year-old, or, if it is for next year, a 29-year-old, so it will have to be soon if something is to happen,” the defender said to BOLD.

“Of course I would like to take a step up, but it is not up to me. I am doing my part to take a step up. All players want to play at the highest level possible and ultimately it is up to the sporting directors to make those choices. I can’t do that much. I’m happy to be at Palace and I have a big role, so that’s what I spend time on.

“The Champions League is always great. I played it in Lyon and got a taste for it. It’s clear that the Champions League is one of the coolest things.”

With rumours that defensive partner, Marc Guehi, could also be the target of other interested parties, it’s difficult to believe that Palace chairman, Steve Parish, would countenance allowing both players to leave.

There’s still plenty of time for the situation to change before the transfer window opens for business in the new year, and Andersen may yet be tempted to stay at Selhurst Park rather than follow Wilfried Zaha’s lead.

Crystal Palace have been linked with a surprise move for former winger Andros Townsend.

Currently without a club after leaving Everton when his contract expired earlier in the summer, Townsend, 32, is facing a decision – continue on the lookout for a new club, or retire from professional playing.

And although the 2023-24 season is nearly 10 games in, Townsend is still without an employer.

However, according to recent reports, Roy Hodgson could look to offer the 32-year-old a late lifeline after Eberechi Eze picked up an unfortunate and untimely injury.

Speaking to GiveMeSport about the speculation surrounding Townsend, HLTCO podcast host Dan Cook, said: “I think with Townsend, I’ve been told, he is obviously unattached, or is still unattached, he spoke about it on a BBC podcast, I believe it was. And I think Crystal Palace have sort of suggested the idea that he could come in and do a couple of training sessions to see if he can get a deal or not.

“I’m not sure if that has moved on. And whilst it may sound a little bit defeatist to certain sections of the Palace fan base, it is a case of us needing bodies at this point in time. I’m not suggesting it’s the best thing for us in the long term, but at the same time, you know, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi played in the League Cup away at Manchester United, he struggled.”

  • Crystal Palace on alert over Leeds midfielder

Crystal Palace on alert over Leeds midfielder

It appears to be a feature of Crystal Palace’s recruitment at present that they intend to hire the best young English talent around.

A preference for those that don’t cost a premium and who can be moulded into exactly the type of player that the Roy Hodgson needs.

At present, the Eagles can boast some brilliant stars such as Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, and if they get their way, they might even add an exciting 17-year-old talent to their roster.

News that they’ve been keeping tabs on a Leeds United starlet for quite some time isn’t likely to go down well in the corridors of power at Elland Road mind.

According to Alan Nixon, via a tweet from the CPFC Transfers HQ account, the Eagles are running the rule over defensive midfielder Archie Gray.

The 2023/24 season has been a breakthrough campaign for the youngster, having played virtually every minute of every game this season per WhoScored.

Whilst Palace have the advantage of offering the player Premier League football, Leeds are already up to fifth in the Championship this season and will be looking to get back in the top flight at the first time of asking.

Furthermore, the Gray family has a rich history at Elland Road, with Archie’s dad Andy, grandfather Frank and great-uncle Eddie Gray all turning out for the club.To that end, there is an emotional pull there that Palace won’t be able to match.

That doesn’t mean a transfer can’t be done, but it’s likely to be difficult.

Roy Hodgson clearly isn’t happy with the way that his Crystal Palace strikers have begun the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The elder statesman amongst the Premier League manager has seen his side draw a blank against Arsenal and narrowly beat Sheffield United on the opening day.

With such a vibrant, attacking side at his disposal, one goal scored in two games isn’t enough to get Hodgson excited, and with nine days left of the transfer window it appears that the south Londoners are going to do their upmost to bring in a striker who has 56 goals in 210 appearances according to the Daily Mail.

In order for there to be room for Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho to join, however, the Selhurst Park outfit must first get rid of Jean-Philippe Mateta say the Daily Mail.

It’s believed that RB Leipzig could be interested in taking the player, though nothing has been confirmed at this stage.

Without the guile, power and pace of Wilfried Zaha, Palace seem to have lost a lot of their ‘zip’ in attack, and that could be a worry for Hodgson.

Therefore, any more for Iheanacho isn’t just strategic but necessary.

There’s plenty of time to secure the player’s future, though the sooner Mateta agrees to join Leipzig – if indeed he wants to – the better.

Takehiro Tomiyasu shown harshest of red cards vs. Crystal Palace

Takehiro Tomiyasu has been shown arguably the harshest red card you’ll see all season.

The Japan international was included in Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup to face Crystal Palace during Monday night’s Premier League clash at Selhurst Park.

Entrusted to fill in for Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, Tomiyasu, 24, was tasked with keeping Jordan Ayew quiet down Palace’s right-hand side.

And doing a good job but picking up a yellow card on the hour mark for taking too long to take a throw-in, Tomiyasu knew he would have to watch his step.

However, unfortunately for the 24-year-old, a passage of play that saw Palace go on the offensive just minutes later led to the Japanese defender being shown a second yellow, and subsequent red card, for what referee Darren Coote deemed to be a shirt pull on Ayew.

Upon review of the incident, which could not be overturned by VAR due to the defender’s dismissal coming via a second yellow and not a straight red, it became abundantly clear just how soft of a booking it was.

See for yourself below and let us know in the comments section whether or not you think Tomiyasu should have been sent down the Palace tunnel.

At the time of writing, Martin Odegaard’s 54-minute penalty kick remains the difference as the Gunners lead 1-0.

Jack Clarke is said to be wanted by Crystal Palace as the Eagles look to swoop in on the winger who used to play for Tottenham.

Clarke failed to make the grade at Tottenham after signing for the club in 2019, making just four appearances for the first team, going on loan to Leeds, QPR, Stoke and Sunderland, before signing permanently for the latter in July last year.

For Sunderland this season, Clarke has eight goals and eight assists in the Championship and The Sun are now reporting that Crystal Palace are keen on the 22-year old.

Clarke has 42 appearances in all competitions this season for the Black Cats

Palace have great attacking talent with the likes of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, and Clarke could be the man they need to form what could become an unstoppable trio.

With Wilfried Zaha out of contract and likely to leave Selhurst Park, Clarke could be the perfect replacement for the Ivorian and will surely be out to prove that Spurs made a mistake in letting him go.

  • Crystal Palace could lose out on exciting Italian star to ‘upwardly mobile’ Premier League rivals

Crystal Palace could lose out on exciting Italian star to ‘upwardly mobile’ Premier League rivals

Aside from the end result, it was a dream Italian debut for 23-year-old Mateo Retegui, the striker scoring the goal that gave the Azzurri hope of reeling England back in after the Three Lions had taken a 2-0 lead in Naples.

It was, ultimately, in vain but Retegui’s quality was clear for all to see. Quality that has seen him come to the attention of clubs in Italy and in England.

According to Corriere dello Sport (subscription required), cited by FC Inter News, Internazionale of Milan and both Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace of the Premier League are showing an interest.

The player currently plies his trade at Tigre in Argentina, but a move to Europe would seem to be the next logical step in his burgeoning career.

Facundo Colidio, who is on loan to Tigre from Inter, would appear to be key to any deal for the player to move to the nerazzurri say Courier dello Sport, though a move to the Premier League and the expected riches that could entail, may appeal.

Dan Cook, speaking on the HLTCO podcast, wasn’t in too much doubt that his team, Crystal Palace, would find it hard to be able to jump to the head of the queue for Retegui’s signature.

“I hate to say this in a Crystal Palace podcast, but I’m not sure we are necessarily anything like as an attractive proposition at the moment as Brighton and Hove Albion,” he said.

“They are upwardly mobile, there is every chance they will get into Europe by the end of this season.

“And you look at our current plight, you know, hopefully Roy Hodgson can steady the ship and keep us afloat in the Premier League.”

With Inter clearly in the box seat, it seems to be a foregone conclusion that a Serie A berth could be Retegui’s from the start of the 2023/24 season, a move that should clearly enhances his credentials for the national team.

Another goal on his second start, this time against Malta, per WhoScored, evidences a special talent.

  • Hodgson’s difficulty as Crystal Palace front man isn’t hitting the mark ahead of relegation battle

Hodgson’s difficulty as Crystal Palace front man isn’t hitting the mark ahead of relegation battle

With the business end of the Premier League campaign fast approaching, Roy Hodgson needs everyone playing to their maximum if he wants to keep Crystal Palace from falling through the trap door and into the English Championship.

The size of the task that the 75-year-old has ahead of him is immense.

According to WhoScored, the south Londoners haven’t yet won a game in 2023, and though they might appear to be sitting pretty in 12th position, they’re actually just four points ahead of bottom club, Southampton.

In their final 10 fixtures, they do have to play the Saints, and five other teams that currently sit below them in the Premier League table: Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, West Ham United, Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton.

To that end, their Premier League fate is very much still in their own hands despite a terrible run of results.

They will of course need every player to play their part, but one journalist believes that front man, Odsonne Edouard, hasn’t really been anything like the player that the Eagles would’ve hoped for.

“I’ve been really disappointed in Edouard because he had a good goalscoring record in Scotland with Celtic, but he just hasn’t been up to scratch,” Daily Express scribe, Ryan Taylor, said to GiveMeSport.

“That was evident in their trip to Arsenal when he missed a great chance at 0-0, which typifies their struggles in front of goal.”

Across the 2022/23 campaign, Edouard has just three goals in the English top-flight and five in total, per WhoScored, which isn’t anywhere close to being good enough for a striker.

If he’s going to come good, then there’s no better time to do so than over the next 10 games. Do that, and Palace might just be looking forward to another Premier League campaign next season.

Crystal Palace recently appointed Roy Hodgson as their manager after parting ways with Patrick Vieira.

The Frenchman was relieved of his duties after a series of disappointing performances. Apparently, the Eagles have appointed Hodgson on a short-term basis and they are looking to bring in someone like Steve Cooper at the end of the season.

Cooper has done an impressive job at Nottingham Forest this season and it remains to be seen whether Crystal Palace can lure him to London at the end of the season.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi seems to rate Cooper highly. He has worked with the 43-year-old Welsh manager previously. Cooper was a part of the under-17 World Cup setup with England where he worked with Guehi and the defender played under Cooper at Swansea as well.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he said: “He’s had a massive impact. I think he’s a fantastic coach and a great person. He’s definitely someone that has helped me get to the point where I am. He really helped develop me as a player and he’s someone that, if I ever need anything, I can call – 100 percent.”

The talented young defender is likely to be delighted if Cooper is appointed as the Crystal Palace manager at the end of the season.

Guehi has been linked with a move away from Palace on the back of some impressive performances this season and the arrival of Cooper could play a key role in keeping him at the club.
