Football Bet of the Day: Monday

Portugal host Luxembourg on Monday evening in a Euro 2024 qualifier. We think there is an enticing market in this contest which we have selected as our bet of the day.

Portugal have looked impressive in their Euro 2024 qualifiers so far, picking up a maximum 12 points from their opening four fixtures. Roberto Martinez has enjoyed a strong start in his new post and with the talent at his disposal, Portugal will be one of the nations to watch should they continue their form and qualify for next summer’s tournament in Germany.

Martinez will be grateful that forward Cristiano Ronaldo is still continuing his international career and still able to deliver what he does best, goals. The 38-year-old has provided Portugal with five goals in their four Euro 2024 qualifiers so far – including two braces against Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.

Ronaldo’s form has not just been exclusive for his national team either. He has been among the goals in the Saudi Pro League, where of course he is the division’s leading man. In six games for Al-Nassr in 2023-24 thus far, he has found the back of the net on six occasions, with his side sixth in the table.

The Portuguese icon continues to defy Father Time and he continues to show that he is still more than capable of competing on this stage, proving that he still a tiresome opponent to come up against as a defender. He has had a habit of scoring braces for Portugal recently and we feel that this can continue against Luxembourg, whom he did fire two past in their previous meeting back in March.

Christopher Eubanks to beat Kwon Soon-woo

American Christopher Eubanks has had a tough time of it recently but can get back to winning form in the first round of the US Open at the expense of Kwon Soon-woo.

Eubanks raised his game at the last Grand Slam – Wimbledon – making the quarter-finals and he has a 19-15 win-loss record on the ATP tour this season.

He made the second round in New York last year and can repeat the feat in front of his home crowd.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to beat Marcos Giron

A run to the semi-finals of the ATP Toronto made for a decent start to the hard-court season for Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is worth a bet to see off Marcos Giron.

Giron lost his opening matches at each of the Washington Citi Open, the Cincinnati Masters and the Winston-Salem Open and is worth taking on.

Alexander Bublik to beat Dominic Thiem

Alexander Bublik struggled to make an impression at the Washington Citi Open and the ATP Toronto but has previously made the third round at the US Open and can edge Dominic Thiem, who has also struggled for form and is short on recent hard-court experience.

Sloane Stephens to beat Beatriz Haddad Maia

Sloane Stephens was the last American to win the women’s singles title at the US Open back in 2017 and she can book her place in the second round this year at the expense of Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Stephens has put her Wimbledon disappointment behind her with some decent performances on the hard courts, having made the last 16 in Montreal and Cincinnati, before reaching the quarter-finals of the Tennis in the Land event in Cleveland.

Alize Cornet to beat Elina Avanesyan

Alize Cornet’s preparations for this year’s US Open have been pretty modest but she did make the quarter-finals of the Prague Open earlier this month and the experienced French ace is worth a bet to overcome Elina Avanesyan, who has lost each of her last two matches.

Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers need season-ending surgery after breaking his ankle against the Seattle Seahawks

Trey Lance’s debut season as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback is finished after less than five full quarters.

Lance broke his right ankle with 2:20 remaining in the first quarter of the Seahawks‘ 27-7 victory on Sunday. With Lance now out, backup Jimmy Garoppolo took over at quarterback and finished the game.

Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the injury and stated that Lance will undergo season-ending surgery on Monday morning.

“It’s always difficult, especially when it’s a big one,” Shanahan said. “You have so strong feelings for someone. It’s unfortunate, but you don’t have time to dwell on it. You have to get straight back into the game, and the players did an excellent job of it. I’m overjoyed with the victory, but it’s a touch depressing in the locker room.”

When the Niners returned to the locker room following their victory, Shanahan struck a similar tone with his squad, encouraging them to be happy of their success but to take a time to remember Lance.

Lance was hurt on a second-down run on a zone-read play in which he had the option of handing it to receiver Ray-Ray McCloud or running it himself up the middle. Lance selected the latter and clashed with Seahawks linebacker Cody Barton after gaining 2 yards. Lance stumbled as his right ankle appeared to fold beneath him.

Lance appeared to be poised to get back up, and center Jake Brendel attempted to assist him, but he quickly fell back down, and the cart was called out to assist him off the field. Lance’s right leg was also placed in an air cast as teammates poured onto the field to cheer him on.
