    Shelbayh Makes ATP Challenger Tour History

    Abdullah Shelbayh completed a historic run Sunday, when he became the first player from Jordan to win an ATP Challenger Tour title.

    The 19-year-old triumphed at the LTP Challenger in Charleston, South Carolina, where he defeated American wild card Oliver Crawford 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 in the final. Shelbayh, who is one of four Challenger champions this week, is the youngest player from an Arab country to win a title at that level.

    “It’s something special for me to represent Jordan at such tournaments at a high level. Being able to win such a great event is such a big title for me, the biggest of my career so far,” Shelbayh told commentator Mike Cation.

    Shelbayh made a breakthrough this February when he made the Manama Challenger final before falling to Thanasi Kokkinakis. The following week, the lefty made his ATP Tour debut in Doha. A 2021 graduate of the Rafa Nadal Academy, Shelbayh hopes to build upon his momentum after capturing his maiden Challenger title.

    “I think the main part is physical strength. I feel like my body hasn’t grown fully. As I keep working in the gym with my fitness coach and with time, I think that will help me a lot to improve the skills that I have,” said Shelbayh.

    The Charleston Challenger final was a duel between two former University of Florida stars. Crawford, who was competing in his first Challenger final, played college tennis at the University of Florida before turning pro in 2020. Shelbayh played one season for the Gators before turning pro in 2022.

    In other Challenger action, Czech Tomas Machac ousted four of the top eight seeds en route to the Co’met Orleans Open title. The 22-year-old overcame eighth seed Jack Draper 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the final to lift his fifth Challenger title and first of this season.

    “I’m super happy that I showed myself that I can be a great player and beat great players,” Machac said. “[In the final], the first set was my best tennis, second set was okay, and the third set was amazing from my head, energy, and everything. I was just fighting and trying to give him my game.”

    Machac, who is at a career-high No. 96 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, ended his three-match skid in Challenger finals while ending Draper’s perfect 4-0 record in Challenger finals.

    “I was in the zone and just focussing on myself,” Machac said. “I played the last two games unbelievably physically and mentally.”

    Germans Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens collected their season-leading sixth Challenger team title in Orleans, where they survived Henry Patten and John-Patrick Smith 7-6(5), 7-6(12) in the final.

    Oriol Roca Batalla was crowned champion at the Braga Open in Portugal, where he rallied past Croatian Duje Ajdukovic 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the final. Roca Batalla, 30, is the second-oldest player this year to win his maiden Challenger title, only behind the 31-year-old Arthur Weber, who won in Zhuhai.

    Competing in his 96th Challenger main draw, the Spaniard Roca Batalla won seven matches in eight days as he went from qualifying to the winners’ circle.

    Thiago Agustin Tirante won his second Challenger title of the season at the Directv Open Bogota. In the final, the 22-year-old Argentine, who also won in Morelos, Mexico in April, was given a walkover by Brazil’s Gustavo Heide, who was dealing with a stomach issue.

    The incredible French striker, Kylian Mbappe, has made history once again, this time in front of his adoring Paris Saint-Germain fans and on the night when team-mate, Lionel Messi, scored his 799th career goal.

    It was the Argentinian that opened the scoring in an eventual 4-2 rout of Nantes, and were he to have bagged his 800th, it may have overshadowed Mbappe’s incredible record.

    In just 247 games according to ESPN FC, the striker has become the Ligue Un club’s all-time top scorer.

    Before Saturday night’s game, he was level on 200 with Edinson Cavani, but his late strike saw him move one ahead of the Uruguayan in the history books.

    It was yet another golden moment in a career which has seen the player score a World Cup final hat-trick, win the World Cup as a teenager, and earn multiple club and individual titles despite being just 24 years of age.

    There appears to be no ceiling to just how good the player can become, and perhaps the only blot on his copybook at this stage is the fact that PSG haven’t been able to secure a longed-for Champions League title.

    If the French giants are able to hang onto Mbappe and Messi for at least another season or two, then that dream might well turn into reality.

    If it does, don’t be at all surprised if the French striker is at the heart of bringing another trophy back to the Parc des Princes.

    Newcastle were defeated 2-0 by Liverpool on Saturday night at St. James’ Park in what was an awful match for Eddie Howe, and the Magpies boss will not want to hear the history he has just made.

    Wu Becomes First Chinese ATP Tour Titlist In History With Dallas Triumph

    Wu Yibing came back from the brink to make history Sunday at the Dallas Open, where the fast-rising 23-year-old saved four championship points before downing John Isner 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12) to become the first Chinese player to lift an ATP Tour trophy.

    Before this week, no Chinese man had ever reached a tour-level final in the Open Era or defeated an opponent in the Top 10 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. Wu achieved both of those in one go with his semi-final victory against World No. 8 Taylor Fritz in Dallas, and he continued his history-making run in Sunday’s final with a milestone victory for tennis in his country.

    “I made history here for my country and for my home,” said Wu at the trophy ceremony. “I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”

    After a bright start, Wu appeared to have faded in the face of a trademark serving barrage from Isner at the indoor ATP 250 event in Texas. The American held championship point on his opponent’s serve at 6-5, 30/40 in the second set, but Wu kept his cool to recover before sealing a historic victory in a nerve-wracking deciding-set tie-break.

    Wu forced Isner to push a forehand long to clinch a third-set tie-break in which the first 22 points went with serve. He completed a remarkable two-hour, 59-minute win despite Isner firing 44 aces in the match.

    “It’s a tough one to lose,” said Isner, who is now 16-15 in tour-level finals. “I don’t know how many match points I had, I’m sure it’s a lot. I swear I thought I won the match a few times. I know he hit one ball… It had to be [on] the back sixteenth of the line on one of the points… Sports can be brutal. I had match point in the second set too.

    “It’s like he plays every point the same, so definitely no nerves,” added Isner when asked about Wu’s performance. “He gets a ball to hit, he hits it, and on this court it’s hard to hit him a shot he is uncomfortable with… He is an unbelievable ballstriker and a very good talent.”

    Even after falling a set behind, Wu continued to strike aggressively from the baseline in his maiden tour-level meeting with Isner. His combination of power and accuracy brought him 41 winners, including seven aces, while the Chinese also won all 13 points he played at the net.

    Wu, who did not compete on the ATP Tour from March 2019 to January 2022 due to a series of injuries, had notched just six tour-level wins prior to this week. Yet he showed no sign of nerves throughout his run, during which he defeated Michael Mmoh, third seed Denis Shapovalov, Adrian Mannarino, top seed Fritz, and Isner.

    On Monday, Wu became just the second Chinese player to crack the Top 100 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. Now he will rise to a career-high World No. 58 just one week later.

    Isner, who pledged to donate $100 to the Isner Family Foundation for each ace he hit this week, finished the tournament with 138 aces, raising $13,800 for needy children in the Dallas area.

    ‘To Be Part Of Tennis History Is An Amazing Feeling’

    Carlos Alcaraz received a raucous reception Wednesday evening at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, where he received the ATP No. 1 Trophy presented by Pepperstone. The 19-year-old is the youngest player in history to earn the award.

    “It means a lot to me,” Alcaraz said. “To get this trophy, the World No. 1, to be part of tennis history along with a lot of legends, for me [it] is an amazing feeling.”

    The Spaniard was set to make his Nitto ATP Finals debut this week, but was forced to withdraw due to an internal oblique muscle tear in his left abdominal wall. He was still happy to take in the atmosphere of the season finale in Turin.

    “I’m a little bit disappointed to not be able to play here in the Nitto [ATP] Finals. I really wanted to play here,” Alcaraz said. “These kind of things can happen in tennis life. But… at the same time I’m really grateful to lift this amazing trophy. It’s an amazing achievement. All the hard work pays off. For me it’s incredible to lift this trophy today.”

    Alcaraz is fully focussed on rehabbing to be in top form for the start of the 2023 season. The year-end World No. 1 gave a positive update on his status Wednesday.

    “[My recovery is] going really well. It’s going really fast, as well. I’m really focused on recovering as soon as possible,” Alcaraz said. “But I could say in a week we improved a lot in the injury. I’m going to say at the beginning of the season, I’m going to be ready, I’m going to be 100 per cent.”

    Alcaraz added: “The first weeks after the injury, [it] is really important to [not] stop. That’s what I did the week and a half that I spent, it was with a lot of exercise.”

    The winner of this year’s US Open as well as ATP Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid is enjoying a holiday “to disconnect a little bit, to take a rest”. But soon he will turn his attention to the preseason.

    Until then, Alcaraz has his eyes on the Nitto ATP Finals, where the prestigious Brad Drewett Trophy is up for grabs.

    “Of course I was watching the matches, not all of them, but a lot of them. I watch it from home. I mean, I always want to watch great matches, great level.
    So with these players here, it’s 100 per cent,” Alcaraz said. “Here in the match, great shots, great rallies. I love to watch these kind of matches. Of course, having Rafa here, I root for him. I root for Spanish players. But I root for great tennis.”

    Jordan’s Shelbayh Makes ATP Challenger Tour History At Rafa Nadal Open

    Abdullah Shelbayh made tennis history Wednesday, when he stunned top seed Dominic Stricker 6-2, 7-5 at the Rafa Nadal Open by Sotheby’s. The 18-year-old became the first player from Jordan to win a match in ATP Challenger Tour history.

    Shelbayh converted his third match point to upset the World No. 127 and collect his maiden win over a Top-200 player at the Challenger event in Mallorca, Spain. When the adrenaline started to wear off Wednesday night, the 2021 Wimbledon boys’ doubles finalist (w/ Daniel Rincon) began to replay the match in his head.

    “I went in with the mentality to win,” Shelbayh said. “He was a tough opponent, he just won a Challenger right before the US Open. My coaches were just like ‘Give it all and try to enjoy the moment!’ But when I went to sleep, after the adrenaline and everything, I started thinking about every single point of the match. It’s a great feeling, and gives me a lot of confidence for upcoming matches.”

    Now in the quarter-finals of the Mallorca Challenger, Shelbayh didn’t realise before his first-round match that a win would seal Jordan tennis history. The Amman native hopes this week’s run will inspire other Jordanians to follow.

    “It’s surreal,” Shelbayh said. “To do something for your country is a big achievement. I come from a small country where tennis is not a big sport and to do that, it means a lot to me to be in the history of my country. I actually never thought about that entering the match, but it feels amazing. I hope many players from Jordan show their talent in the near future and I can inspire them as much as possible.”

    Although his first ATP win came far from his Jordan home, it was only fitting it came at the Rafa Nadal Academy, where Shelbayh has trained since he was 14-years-old.

    His journey to Spain began when Toni Nadal flew to Jordan to visit the lefty, recruiting him to train on the island of Mallorca. Much like Toni’s nephew, Rafa, Shelbyah is right-handed in everything besides tennis. When Shelbyah decided to train at ‘RNA’, he first arrived with feelings as if he had ‘made it’.

    “When I first stayed here as an annual student, I was like, ‘Look how far I’ve come! Unbelievable!’ Things here are completely different than where I was, like having Toni on my court many times. You have everything provided for you.”

    Shelbayh, a 2021 Academy graduate, was given a wild card into this week’s Rafa Nadal Open by Sotheby’s, which is hosted at the famed tennis centre. Shelbayh admitted that he felt some pressure playing at home in his opening match.

    “The pressure I felt (Wednesday) since I’m playing at home, was more mental. I’m trying not to put too much of it on myself.”

    The World No. 654 can add this week’s run to his list of memories at his training base. Perhaps no memory will surpass the day he was surprised to find out that he would practise with 22-time major champion Nadal.

    “I got called out of nowhere when I was about 16-years-old. They (the coaches) said, ‘You want to go practise with Rafa?’ and I was like, ‘Of course I do!’ Then, I started feeling nervous. When I got on court, Rafa was there, and the first couple balls I was like, ‘I don’t want to miss! I don’t want to ruin his practice, that’s my main goal!’ As it went on, I started playing great, Carlos Moya was giving me tips and now they are big supporters (of me). I’ve practised with him many times now, but the first time was special to me.”

    The Jordanian also has close ties with #NextGenATP rising star Ben Shelton. Shelbayh completed his freshman year at the University of Florida this spring, and like Shelton, has decided to turn pro.

    “We were going to live together, but we both decided to go pro. He was my best friend at the University (of Florida). It’s great to see someone like him do well and brings motivation to me to keep going.”

    Shelbyah is at a career-high No. 532 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. Should he advance to the semi-finals at the Mallorca Challenger, he would break through into the Top 500 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

    Making history during his first ATP Challenger Tour event is just the beginning of the 18-year-old’s professional career.
