US Open Day 7 Preview: Medvedev & Kyrgios In NYC Showdown

A blockbuster fourth-round clash between World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios headlines the action on Sunday at the US Open, where Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud are also seeking to reach the quarter-finals at the hard-court major in New York.

1) Medvedev Vs. Kyrgios Part III: New York plays host to the third act of a gripping 2022 rivalry on Sunday as World No. 1 Medvedev and the in-form Kyrgios collide.

Medvedev proved too strong for the Australian over four sets at the Australian Open in January, but Kyrgios improved his lead in the pair’s ATP Head2Head series to 3-1 with an impressive three-set triumph in Montreal in mid-August. A confident Kyrgios is 13-2 since reaching his maiden major final at Wimbledon in July, and Medvedev is prepared for a match of fine margins.

“We’ve played great matches. I think all have been quite tight on the scoreboard,” said Medvedev after defeating Wu Yibing in the third round in New York. “It’s 3-1 to him but I will try to do better this time and it will be a great match for people to watch.”

A spot in the quarter-finals is not the only thing on the line for Medvedev, who would lose his No. 1 spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings after the US Open should he fall to Kyrgios on Sunday. For Kyrgios, securing a quarter-final berth would lift the Australian back into the Top 20 of the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.

2) Berrettini To Brave Foki?: Matteo Berrettini fended off the challenge of 2012 champion Andy Murray on Friday to progress to the fourth round for the fourth consecutive year. Next up, the 13th seed faces another player renowned for his on-court resilience in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Davidovich Fokina rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit to defeat Marton Fucsovics in the third round, and the World No. 39 will enter his second tour-level meeting against 2019 semi-finalist Berrettini with confidence — he was a straight-sets winner in the pair’s sole previous meeting on the clay in Monte Carlo in 2021.

3) Ruud Seeks To Halt Moutet’s Dream Run: Casper Ruud is into uncharted territory in New York. The Norwegian held firm to beat Tommy Paul over five sets on Friday and reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time. The run follows a significant breakthrough for Ruud at Grand Slam level after his maiden championship match appearance at Roland Garros in June.

Ruud’s next opponent, Corentin Moutet, thought his US Open was over eight days ago after falling in the final round of qualifying. Yet the Frenchman has seized his opportunity as a lucky loser to surge to the fourth round of a major for the first time. Sunday’s clash will be the maiden tour-level meeting between dangerous lefty Moutet and fifth seed Ruud.

4) Carreno Busta & Khachanov Clash: Is Pablo Carreno Busta embarking on another dream US Open run? The Spaniard was a semi-finalist in New York in 2017 and 2020, and the 12th seed has been a consistent performer so far this fortnight, defeating 2020 champion Dominic Thiem, Alexander Bublik and Alex de Minaur all in four sets.

The Montreal champion now meets Karen Khachanov as he chases his 10th win of the North American hard-court swing. The World No. 31 Khachanov has won the past three meetings between the pair, including clashes on hard courts at the Tokyo Olympics and at Indian Wells. Can Carreno Busta summon more New York magic to halt that trend on Sunday?

5) Ram/Salisbury Aim To Maintain Momentum: Defending doubles champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury have been in ominous form in New York so far, producing two straight-sets victories to reach the third round for the fourth year in a row. Yet their next opponents, Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini, also know a thing or two about winning at the majors.

The Italians triumphed at the 2015 Australian Open and reached the semi-finals in New York in 2011. With both teams chasing their third tour-level titles of 2022, top seeds Ram and Salisbury could be set their biggest test yet as they chase their third Grand Slam crown.

US Open Day 5 Preview: Berrettini & Murray Ready For Battle

Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray will meet in a blockbuster clash on Day Five at the US Open, where the top half of the draw will take to court in third-round action.

Reigning champion Daniil Medvedev will look to continue his title defence when he faces history-maker Wu Yibing, while #NextGenATP Briton Jack Draper aims to build on his standout win against sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime when he plays Karen Khachanov.

ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch on Friday in New York.

1) Berrettini & Murray Clash: Berrettini and Murray have tasted success at the hard-court major over the years. The Italian reached the semi-finals in 2019, while Murray lifted his maiden Grand Slam trophy at the event in 2012.

Both will be desperate to create more standout memories in Flushing Meadows over the next week. However, with the pair meeting in the opening match of the day on Arthur Ashe Stadium, only one will be able to continue their journey.

Murray backed up his first-round victory against Francisco Cerundolo by defeating American wild card Emilio Nava to reach the US Open third round for the first time since 2016. The former World No. 1 heads into his match against Berrettini trailing 1-2 in their ATP Head2Head series and expects it to be a difficult test.

“He’s been up at the top of the game for quite a number of years, and now he’s very consistent,” Murray said when asked about the Italian. “He’s a big server who puts down a pretty high percentage of serves usually, so always makes it difficult to break and is always in the match because of that. He’s not just a big server, though. He has a good slice backhand, he has a big forehand. I think he’s a very good competitor as well.”

The 13th seed Berrettini arrived in New York off disappointing first-round exits in Montreal and Cincinnati. The 26-year-old has started to find form, though, defeating Nicolas Jarry and Hugo Grenier in his first two matches. Berrettini holds a 14-4 record at the hard-court major, having reached the quarter-finals last year.

2) Medvedev’s Title Defence Mission: Medvedev has made a perfect start to his US Open title defence this week, cruising past Stefan Kozlov and Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets. The top seed, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the championship match last season, will look to improve his 22-4 record at the major when he faces history-maker Wu Yibing in the night session on Arthur Ashe stadium.

Prior to this week, no Chinese man had competed in the main draw at the US Open in the Open Era. Now they have a player in the third round after the 22-year-old became the first Chinese man to reach the third round at a Grand Slam since Kho Sin-Khie at Wimbledon in 1946.

With the odds stacked against him, Yibing will look to score a seismic upset against Medvedev, who is aiming to capture his second major title and second tour-level crown of the season after he triumphed in Los Cabos in August.

3) Cachin & Draper Look To Continue Runs: Argentine Pedro Cachin dropped to the floor after he edged American qualifier Brandon Holt in a fifth-set tie-break to reach the third round at a major for the first time. The 27-year-old qualifier, who is 52-15 across all levels this year, rallied from two-sets-to-love down to advance on debut in New York. Cachin, currently up to No. 58 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, will look to carry his momentum into his match against Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

#NextGenATP Briton Jack Draper’s standout season hit new heights on Wednesday when he upset sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. The 20-year-old, who is currently fifth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Milan, will next face Karen Khachanov as he aims to reach the fourth round at a major for the first time.

“I’ve watched [Khachanov] a fair bit. A tough competitor. He’s physical,” Draper said when looking ahead to the match. “It’s going to be a really tough match. He’s been inside of the top 50 for a long time now. So in a Grand Slam, it’s going to be a physical match again.”

4) Kyrgios & Ruud Take To Court: Following his second-round win against Benjamin Bonzi, Nick Kyrgios admitted his mentality has changed this season. The Australian, who reached the final at Wimbledon and holds a 33-9 record on the season, revealed he has tried to reinvent himself this year in an attempt to rise to the top of the game again.

So far, it is a strategy that has worked well for the 23rd seed and one he will look to continue when he plays American J.J. Wolf for the first time in the third round on Louis Armstrong Stadium. A victory for Kyrgios will see him reach the fourth round at the US Open for the first time.

Casper Ruud could leave New York as No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings if results go his way over the next week. The Norwegian, who has never been beyond the third round in five previous appearances at the US Open, rallied past Tim Van Rijthoven in the second round and will now take on 29th seed Tommy Paul. The American eliminated countryman Sebastian Korda to reach the last 32.

5) Ram/Salisbury Headline Doubles Action: Last year’s champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury will look to capture their sixth consecutive win when they face Aslan Karatsev and Luke Saville in the second round. The American-British team lifted their third ATP Masters 1000 trophy as a team in Cincinnati last month, before they cruised past Federico Coria and Cristian Rodriguez in their opening match in New York.

Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski became the first team to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals following their first-round win in Flushing Meadows. The second seeds will play Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow, while third seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer will face Aleksandr Nedovyesov and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.

US Open Day 4 Preview: Nadal’s Perfect Slam Streak On The Line

Rafael Nadal takes a perfect 20-0 Grand Slam winning streak in 2022 into Day Four at the US Open, where he will take on Italian veteran Fabio Fognini, who stunned the Spaniard inside Arthur Ashe stadium seven years ago. Nadal continues his pursuit of the No. 1 Pepperstone ATP Rankings Thursday, as does his 19-year-old countryman Carlos Alcaraz.

ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch on Day Four at Flushing Meadows.

1) Rafa Aims To Avenge 2015 US Open Loss To Fognini:
Rafael Nadal, who won his opening match in four sets against Australian Rinky Hijikata, has lost only twice in Grand Slams from two sets to love up. Fabio Fognini made history at the 2015 US Open, when he became the first to accomplish the rare comeback (Tsitsipas accomplished the same feat at ‘21 Australian Open). The 22-time major champion will be determined to avoid any similar history making feats by the Italian, who came from two sets down Tuesday in the opening round.

Despite that loss seven-years ago, Nadal has won eight of his past nine meetings with Fognini, and leads the ATP Head2Head 13-4. The four-time US Open titlist is the current No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings and is chasing his third major crown of 2022 in just his second tournament back from suffering an abdominal injury at Wimbledon.

“Things are not perfect when you are not competing very often,” Nadal said. “When you come back from injury. You need to be humble enough to go through this process and accept that you need to fight and you need to accept that you are going to suffer.”

Victory will see Nadal become the firs singles player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be played 13-20 November in Turin, Italy. Nadal is also looking to break a tie with John McEnroe on 65 match wins at the US Open to move into outright seventh place on the men’s match-wins leaders board at Flushing Meadows.

Fognini completed his record-equalling 10th comeback from two sets to love down Tuesday, when he defeated Aslan Karatsev to advance to the second round. The 35-year-old celebrated his 400th tour-level win this past month in Hamburg and will now look for his first victory over a Top-10 player since he beat Nadal in Monte Carlo in 2019.

2) Three Seeded Players Meet Home Favourites:
When players go toe-to-toe against Americans in New York, they often have a second opponent: the home crowd. Grigor Dimitrov, seeded 17th, is among four seeded players facing Americans Thursday. He will tackle #NextGenATP Brandon Nakashima. The Bulgarian won their only meeting in Rome earlier this season.

World No. 13 Jannik Sinner meets Christopher Eubanks, who advanced through qualifying and claimed his maiden Grand Slam main-draw win on Tuesday. Cincinnati champion Borna Coric, seeded 25th, will expect lengthy rallies as he goes against Jenson Brooksby, who reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows last year. Frances Tiafoe rounds out the home hopes in action Thursday, when he takes on Australian Jason Kubler.

3) Alcaraz Continues Quest For Maiden Slam & World No. 1:
Carlos Alcaraz’s rise up the Pepperstone ATP Rankings this year has been a storyline to the 2022 season. This fortnight, he has a chance to climb to the top spot. Should the Spaniard make it as far as the final in New York, the 19-year-old will have a chance of becoming the youngest No. 1 in the history of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on 12 September.

Alcaraz goes head-to-head with Argentine Federico Coria Thursday, their second meeting. Coria needed three sets to win in Rio de Janeiro in 2020. Should Alcaraz advance, he would tie Stefanos Tsitsipas for a season record 46 wins.

4)Top-10 Seeds Norrie, Hurkacz, Rublev In Action:
Cameron Norrie, who boasts 42 wins this season, aims to build on his comfortable win against Benoit Paire when he meets Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the second round. Hubert Hurkacz, fresh off a straight-sets victory, hopes to continue his summer hard-court success when he goes against Ilya Ivashka.

Andrey Rublev, who needed five sets to get through his opening round match against Laslo Djere, meets Soonwoo Kwon for the fourth-time this season (Rublev 3-0).

5) #NextGenATP Star Musetti Sets Sights On Third Round:
Lorenzo Musetti, 20, battled through a first-round match against David Goffin, triumphing in a fifth-set tie-break. Musetti encounters Dutchman Gijs Brouwer, who advanced through qualifying and earned his maiden Grand Slam victory Tuesday over Winston-Salem champion Adrian Mannarino.

Musetti, who reached the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2021, attempts to surpass last year’s result at Flushing Meadows, where he was ousted in the second round by Reilly Opelka.

US Open Preview: Medvedev, Felix On Guard On Day 3

After seeing fellow Top-10 seeds Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz crash out of the top half on Day 1, top seed Daniil Medvedev and sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime won’t take anything for granted when they suit up for battle in the US Open second round Wednesday.

ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch on Day Three at Flushing Meadows, where Medvedev continues his title defense and Felix faces dangerous young Brit Jack Draper.

1) Felix Meets Draper For First Encounter:
Felix Auger-Aliassime, semi-finalist at the US Open last season, is at a career-high No. 8 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. The Canadian should expect a fierce challenge in his first meeting with fast-rising 20-year-old Jack Draper.

Felix, who boasts 37 wins this season including his maiden ATP Tour title in Rotterdam, has had success in New York dating back to his junior days. The Montreal native claimed the boys’ singles title at Flushing Meadows in 2016 and the boys’ doubles title with countryman Denis Shapovalov in 2015. Last year, the 22-year-old became the first Canadian men’s singles semi-finalist in tournament history.

#NextGenATP lefty Draper, who is making his US Open debut, is hungry for his second Top 10 win. After earning his first win over a Top 10 player earlier this month when he ousted Tsitsipas in Montreal, the Brit looks to strengthen his hold on a spot at the eight-player Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals with an upset over Auger-Aliassime Wednesday. The 2018 Wimbledon boys’ singles finalist has won four ATP Challenger Tour titles this year, a season record he shares with Argentine Pedro Cachin.

2) Defending Champ Medvedev Continues Quest For Second Slam:
After winning in convincing fashion on Monday, Medvedev, who boasts a 19-2 record in his last 21 matches at the Open, looks to carry his momentum into the second round against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Rinderknech, a former Texas A&M University standout, reached his maiden Tour-level final earlier this season in Adelaide (l. Kokkinakis). The 27-year-old now looks to earn the biggest win of his career on Arthur Ashe Stadium Wednesday night.

3) Paul-Korda Clash Leads Home Favourites:
World No. 34 Tommy Paul is the highest-ranked American in action Wednesday. The 25-year-old seeks his first victory over countryman Sebastian Korda, who leads their ATP Head2Head 3-0.

Other home hopes in action Wednesday include J.J. Wolf, who cruised past 16th seed Roberto Bautista Agut on day one and now looks to return to the third round, which he reached in 2020. First, he has to get through Chilean Alejandro Tabilo. Brandon Holt and Emilio Nava also aim to advance in New York Wednesday.

4) #NextGenATP Star Nava Battles Former Champion Murray:
Wild card Nava, 20, aims to back up his maiden Grand Slam victory from Monday when he meets the 2012 champion Andy Murray, 15 years his senior, to open play on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Murray looks to claim back-to-back hard-court wins for the first time since January in Sydney. Should Nava advance, he would rise to 12th in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Milan.

The four qualifiers still alive in the top half of the draw also look to build upon their success. Daniel Elahi Galan, who stunned Tsitsipas Monday, faces Australian Jordan Thompson. Holt, who upset Taylor Fritz, faces Argentine Pedro Cachin. In a matchup of two qualifiers, Portugal’s Nuno Borges and China’s Wu Yibing look to reach the third round of a major for the first time. On Monday, Wu became the first Chinese man to win a singles main-draw match at a Grand Slam in the Open Era.

5) 2022 Slam Finalists Ruud, Kyrgios In Action:
Roland Garros finalist Casper Ruud and Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios look to continue their success this season. Ruud, seeded fifth, meets Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven, who narrowly escaped Monday’s first-round contest against Zhang Zhizhen, against whom he saved seven match points.

Kyrgios, 12-2 in his past 14 matches, faces Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, who survived in five sets in his opening match against countryman Ugo Humbert. Bonzi was a dominant force on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2021, when he collected a season-leading 50 wins. Kyrgios is seeded to meet Medvedev in the fourth round.
