    Manchester United have been tipped to scout Stade Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana during next month’s World Cup.

    That is a prediction made by The Guardian’s Ed Aarons, who believes the young wide-attacker could soon attract some serious attention, including from Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils.

    Ghana’s Sulemana, 20, left Denmark’s top flight and joined Stade Rennes a little over 12 months ago.

    Since playing for Bruno Genesio’s Rennes, Sulemana has continued his impressive breakthrough and is now set to travel with his country to Qatar for this winter’s World Cup.

    However, despite having four years left on his deal, Aarons wouldn’t be surprised to see the 20-year-old earn himself a massive move before then.

    When asked if United will scout the young winger before the January transfer window, Aarons, who spoke to GiveMeSport, said: “I really do actually, this guy’s very exciting.

    “He was in Denmark until this season, and he moved to Rennes in the summer in a Danish record for the league for €20 million. And in France he’s doing very well as well, he’s a very exciting winger.”

    Should Aarons’ prediction prove accurate, serious questions will be asked about what that could mean for Jadon Sancho’s Old Trafford future.

    Struggling to impress so far this season, given how much the club invested in him two summers ago, Ten Hag will know that the Englishman must step up his game if he is to turn his underwhelming United career around, and should the 22-year-old fail, that could open the door for a player like Sulemana to come in.

    Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale believes the World Cup has come around too soon for him to be England’s first-choice between the posts.

    When talking to the Yours, Mine, Away podcast, he said: “I think the World Cup personally is six months too soon for me to really challenge, and I’ve said this a few times, it’s not really for people to go: ‘Oh no, you should be number one’. I’m being realistic, I’ve played three times for England with a World Cup coming in six weeks. I’m not really going to play.

    “But that’s not me throwing the towel in. I’m fighting to be that starting goalkeeper. But if I’m not, I’ll support whoever is the best that I can.”

    Whilst Ramsdale may receive a call-up for the tournament in November, it’s unlikely he will start over Everton’s Jordan Pickford, who has been England’s number one at both the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 tournaments – winning the Golden Glove award in the latter.

    It’s unknown whether he will rank above Nick Pope in Gareth Southgate’s preferences for the position. The Newcastle United keeper has made 10 caps for the Three Lions compared to Ramsdale’s three.

    There were smiles all around as the Big Four enjoyed each other’s company the night before the action begins. Besides catching up, they posed for photos on the River Thames. Entering the Laver Cup, the stars have combined for 4,043 tour-level wins.

    The big questions for England before the World Cup

    Gareth Southgate’s England: The big questions to answer before the World Cup

    Rarely has a manager faced the simultaneous situation of relegation from one competition while being considered among the favourites for another. This is where England find themselves in their final gathering before the World Cup finals start in November, a curious juxtaposition of trying to salvage a faltering UEFA Nations League campaign while getting ready for the biggest show on Earth.

    Of course, the Nations League pales into insignificance compared with what is to come in Qatar, but England’s position at the bottom of League A Group 3 hints at a persistently underwhelming level of performance which raises questions that Gareth Southgate needs to find answers to now.

    The nadir undoubtedly came in mid-June when England slumped to their worst home defeat in 97 years, a 4-0 loss to Hungary in front of an unimpressed Molineux crowd, thousands of whom sang “you don’t know what you’re doing” and “you’re getting sacked in the morning” at a shellshocked Southgate.

    It came with a much-changed lineup at the end of a long season, with many visibly exhausted players, but the public judgement was unmitigated and brutal. After 28 players assembled at St George’s Park on Monday for upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany, midfielder Jack Grealish described that reaction as “very harsh” on a manager who has overseen steady and undeniable progress during his near six years in charge.

    England reached the 2018 World Cup semifinals before losing the third-place playoff to Belgium, finished third in the inaugural Nations League in 2019 and runners-up in last year’s delayed Euro 2020 final.

    Fourth, third, second. The next step is clear. But for Southgate to deliver the nation’s first trophy in 56 years, there are several issues to resolve during this international break as players scramble for a place in his final 26-man squad.

    Who plays in central midfield?

    This is arguably the essence of the England conundrum. The central-midfield axis of Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice gave England the stability and protection to embark on a run to last year’s Euro 2020 final. However, neither is a particular dynamic passer of the ball and they cannot control games in the manner of, say, Italy’s Jorginho or Marco Verratti. Both those players took the final away from England at Wembley and it is a familiar problem: in 2019’s Nations League semifinal it was Netherlands’ Frenkie De Jong, in 2018 it was Croatia‘s Luka Modric, in 2012 it was Italy’s Andrea Pirlo.

    There has often been a pass master ready to expose England’s inability to keep possession in the big knockout games. Phillips is a doubt for the tournament with a shoulder problem which may require surgery. Jude Bellingham continues to emerge with huge promise at Borussia Dortmund and the clamour for his inclusion in Qatar will grow if he performs well against Italy and Germany. It is a big ask of a 19-year-old with just six England starts to his name but his emergence would represent a genuine evolution in the team from last summer.

    Is Southgate bold enough?

    Southgate’s inherent caution is understandable. Mindful that England simply do not possess a metronomic midfield presence like Modric or De Jong, Southgate has constructed a compact team accentuating the importance of togetherness and diligence without the ball. That has led to accusations of excessive conservatism, given the wealth of attacking options at his disposal.

    Southgate is right, or course, that any top side needs balance and he can’t throw in six forwards for any game, but there is a sense the brake could be applied a little less rigorously to unleash England’s full potential. It is hard to fault a manager who came within a penalty shootout of delivering tournament success for the first time in more than five decades, but performances have been underwhelming for a while and these Nations League games are an opportunity to shift the needle. Picking no fewer than 12 defenders in his latest squad raised some eyebrows in this context.

    Big players out of form or injured

    Harry Maguire is lucky to be in this England squad. He only made it because of Southgate’s enduring loyalty to a player whose decline at Manchester United has been stark and sharp. Maguire is England’s defensive lynchpin and with games in short supply at Old Trafford, he needs to seize his chance to reinforce that position in the next week.

    Southgate has never been entirely convinced by Trent Alexander-Arnold, a view he can more easily accommodate given the depth of right-back and right wing-back options at his disposal. Alexander-Arnold is a phenomenal talent in possession but his Liverpool performances have been consistently laced with defensive errors. Jordan Pickford is just ahead of Aaron Ramsdale in the race to be England’s No. 1 but the former is missing this time with a thigh problem. With no warm-up matches immediately before the tournament begins, the chance to cement that understanding between goalkeeper and defence falls to Ramsdale.

    Grealish, another yet to entirely win Southgate over, has been candid about his lack of form so far this season but was selected ahead of Jadon Sancho and should be a better player for a year’s tutelage from Pep Guardiola. Left-back is another spot to be decided with Luke Shaw, who excelled last summer, struggling with form and injury, while Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell returns to the squad for the first time since November following knee surgery.

    The stars of the 2022 Laver Cup dressed up on Wednesday evening to take part in the events official group photo, gathering by the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London before play begins Friday at The O2.

    Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray were among the players who boarded a boat on the River Thames before posing by the UK landmarks ahead of the tournament.

    Federer and Murray shared a joke before travelling to the Tower of London.

    The event, which sees Team Europe face Team World in a combination of singles and doubles matches, was founded by Federer in 2017 and named after Rod Laver. The Australian, who won 11 major titles joined the teams for the shoot, pictured below on the boat as it passed The O2.

    Before the serious business commences in London on Friday, the players and captains shared jokes and played games as they took in the London scenery.

Second, rookie coach Scaloni was appointed as a stop gap caretaker pretty much because he fulfilled the sole criteria at the time — he wasn’t a big financial risk. And now his team are referred to in Argentina as “the Scaloneta” — the house that he built.

    Argentina had previously made a long term bet with high profile, dynamic Jorge Sampaoli. It was a disaster that should have been predicted. Argentina simply did not have the quick defenders and ball-playing keepers that are needed to play the Sampaoli way. The ageing squad limped away from Russia — where they flirted with first-round elimination. With a huge pay off, Sampaoli was sacked. Money was in short supply, and so in came Scaloni. He didn’t talk like a caretaker.

    “[World Cup finalists] France and Croatia robbed the ball and were in a position to shoot in 3 or 4 seconds,” was his post-Russia conclusion. “That’s the way football is going, it’s the football I like and the moment has come to introduce this in Argentina. We’re going to be more direct and vertical.”

    There was an obvious problem with this approach. It is not a model of play which is a good fit for Lionel Messi. It got off to a bad start. Scaloni’s first competitive match was their 2019 Copa America opener against Colombia. Argentina were all stretched out, and easily picked off on their way to a 2-0 defeat. The rest of the competition was Argentina’s attempts to edge towards a more workable idea of play. They played well in that semifinal loss to Brazil. But with Messi plus two strikers — Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero — they were top heavy and too easily hit on the counter attack.
