Cody Gakpo has admitted that he thought he was going to sign for Man United before eventually agreeing a switch to rivals Liverpool.

The Netherlands international, who enjoyed an impressive winter World Cup campaign in Qatar, has been destined to secure a big move for quite some time.

Heavily linked with Man United, due to Erik Ten Hag’s Dutch connection, Gakpo appeared nailed on to join the Red Devils, especially after Cristiano Ronaldo mutually agreed to terminate his contract, leaving the 20-time league winners desperately short of goalscoring options.

However, after stalling on a potential deal, United saw rivals Liverpool steal a march in the race to bring Gakpo to the Premier League, and apparently uninterested in going head-to-head with their enemies, Jurgen Klopp was able to land his man for around £40m (Sky Sports) with relative ease.

However, speaking in a recent interview, the former PSV attacker admitted he spent much of the year expecting to play at Old Trafford.

“It was difficult this summer. It was a very intense period,” the 23-year-old said, as quoted by FourFourTwo.

“I tried to find my peace, but it was difficult. I thought I was going to Manchester United, but in the end it didn’t work out.”

Gakpo has yet to make his club debut but with Liverpool preparing to travel to Brentford for a Premier League clash on Monday, the Reds’ new number 18 could be in line to feature.

Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign PSV forward Cody Gakpo, with the Dutch club confirming the transfer on their official Twitter account.

The Dutch international has been in impressive form for PSV this season and continued his displays during the World Cup.

With Luis Diaz out injured, Liverpool haven’t messed around ahead of the January transfer window, bringing in Gakpo to bolster their attacking options. Liverpool are yet to officially confirm the deal, but goalkeeper coach John Achterberg appears to have done so himself, commenting on Gakpo’s Instagram post, as seen below.

Gakpo’s versatility could make him a useful option for Jurgen Klopp. The 23-year-old can play across the front line and his output in front of goal would make him a welcome addition at Anfield.

With Roberto Firmino out of contract at the end of the season and Diaz currently our injured, Liverpool were in need of further attacking options, especially considering their poor start to the Premier League season.

PSV forward Cody Gakpo is set to decide on his future following the World Cup.

The 23-year-old started his fourth consecutive World Cup match as Netherlands saw out a crucial 3-1 win to knock out the United States and secure their place in the quarter-finals. It was the first match of the tournament in which he did not get on the scoresheet after netting three times already.

He, along with his teammates, will be preparing for their next test against Argentina next Friday, December 9, with a rampant Lionel Messi keen to seal his record-breaking honours collection with the lucrative trophy.

Manchester United came close to agreeing a deal for Gakpo last summer, before prioritising the signing of Antony from Ajax. Months later, the Dutchman admitted it was “a shame” a transfer did not materialise.

The Red Devils look set to reignite their pursuit of the prolific forward, who has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 appearances at club level this season, once the January window opens.

    Gakpo speaks on transfer speculation

Gakpo is putting transfers at the back of his mind, though, and told The Athletic he is focusing solely on the World Cup. He said: “I have to be honest, I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on the tournament and want to keep performing well, to keep helping the team.

“Hopefully, when we become world champions we can think about other things. I try to keep focused and the other players don’t really speak about that kind of thing.”
