Erik ten Hag claims his side are ‘on the up’ despite derby loss

Erik ten Hag believes that his side is going in the right direction despite their home defeat to Manchester City.

Currently sitting eighth in the league table, the Red Devils have had a torrid start to the season and have now lost five games.

Although they were not expected to get a result against the treble winners, the manner in which they lost was telling.

After conceding in the first half, Manchester United failed to create any real opportunity after the break with their city rivals dominating the ball.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag claimed that his side performed ‘very well’.

“When you see the first half it is toe-to-toe and just the penalty changes the game, but even then we could have returned in the game with the shot of Scott McTominay just before half-time.” he said via the Guardian.

“For chances it was very toe-to-toe and also in the previous games against them in the FA Cup final and January it was very close. So the probability that we could win was there in all the games.

“The start was difficult but we are on the way up. I am sure when we have some injured players coming back then our side will be stronger. We have to be patient.”

Liverpool will face renewed transfer interest in star player, claims journalist

Liverpool will reportedly face fresh transfer interest in Mohamed Salah from clubs in Saudi Arabia in the near future, Fabrizio Romano has suggested in his latest YouTube video.

Speaking on his channel today, Romano explained just how strong the Saudi interest in Salah is, with Liverpool doing well to hold on to the Egypt international during the summer, and in September while the Saudi window was still open.

See below as Romano discusses the latest on Salah, explaining that Liverpool still need to be respected for their strong stance, but also with the clear warning that interest from Saudi is not likely to go away…

Salah is one of the finest attacking players in world football and it would be a huge blow for Liverpool to lose him, even if he’s not getting any younger.

The Merseyside giants might need to think about replacing Salah at some point, but they’ll also surely be keen to put that off for as long as possible, as he clearly still adds so much to this team.

  • Shamida to enhance her Irish St Leger claims at the Curragh

Shamida to enhance her Irish St Leger claims at the Curragh

Racing on Sunday, August 20th in the UK and Ireland takes place at Curragh, Pontefract, Sandown, Southwell (AW) and Tramore.

It is the Irish St Leger Trial at the Curragh where a Dermot Weld-trained filly can showcase what she is capable of over this stayers’ trip and give her trainer a Group Three success on the card in Ireland.

    Tip 1

    Pontefract 15:25 – Gale Force Maya @ 11/4

Two-time C&D winner GALE FORCE MAYA (11/4) was at the top of her game last summer, scoring in back-to-back races at this level. She has made a slow start to her latest campaign but a third-place finish in a Group Three race at York (6f) last month suggests she could be finding her feet again.

Michael Dods’ mare chased home Swingalong and Royal Acclaim respectively in the Summer Stakes at York. She was conceding 6lb to the winner, so it was an excellent run on the Knavesmire.

The experienced sprinter features on the Betfred Betfinder as one of the Most Napped selections today. She finished second in this race 12 months ago, but this time she can land the top prize in the pick of the races from Pontefract.

    Tip 2

    Curragh 16:05 – Unless @ 5/2

UNLESS (5/2) stepped up to this 1m2f trip for the first time in her career at this course last week and she appeared to appreciate the extra two furlongs. She stayed on strongly to land the Listed race for Aidan O’Brien.

The daughter of Justify is making a quick reappearance in this Group Three Royal Whip Stakes. It will be the first time she has featured at this level, but she remains open to improvement, especially over this distance.

It has been a solid campaign from the three-year-old so far. She finished fourth of 27 runners in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot, while she has come home in the frame in all seven appearances this season.

The ground at the Curragh should not be a problem for O’Brien’s filly this afternoon. She looks like the one they all have to beat in this Group Three contest.

    Tip 3

    Curragh 16:35 – Shamida @ 9/4

SHAMIDA (9/4) is a lightly raced filly who has taken a huge step forward on her last two appearances at Leopardstown. She comes into this Irish St Leger Trial looking to complete a hat-trick of wins.

The daughter of former Derby winner Australia broke her maiden over 1m4f on her penultimate outing. She led inside the final 110 yards of that race where she looked very strong at the finish.

Dermot Weld’s filly then featured over this distance in the Group Three Stanerra Stakes. She was given a very patient ride by jockey Chris Hayes, as the pair left it as late as possible, getting up in the final strides of the contest.

There is likely to be a lot more to come from this improving filly. If she extends her winning run here, it will open a lot of doors for her in the final months of the season.

The transfer saga surrounding Kylian Mbappe has taken an intriguing turn, with both Liverpool and Chelsea now reportedly vying for the French superstar’s signature.

The Mirror yesterday reported that Liverpool had engaged in talks with PSG over a possible loan move for Mbappe, whose mother is a passionate supporter of the club.

And according to the latest report from the Daily Record, Chelsea have also joined in the race as they look to hijack Liverpool’s move for the Frenchman.

As per the report, Chelsea are attempting to negotiate a cash plus player deal with PSG for Mbappe and that Chelsea’s co-owner Todd Boehly has reportedly engaged in direct discussions with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi regarding the potential transfer

    Mbappe to Chelsea?

If we have learned anything from last two transfer windows, it’s that new owner Todd Boehly is not afraid of spending big to sign the players he want. Over the previous two transfer windows he has spend £600m plus in transfers.

The situation arises as PSG look to cash in on Mbappe this summer after the player declined to sign a contract extension with the club.

His current deal is set to expire next summer, and he has reportedly rejected a one-year extension offer from PSG with his heart reportedly set on a move to Real Madrid.

Journalist claims Antonio Conte has reached “the point of no return” with Tottenham

TigerGaming Poker 100% up To $1000 Welcome Bonus

According to GiveMeSport, Antonio Conte has reached “the point of no return” with Tottenham, with Dean Jones claiming that the club feels that they brought in Conte to win them a trophy, which he has failed to do so far..

Conte did an exceptional job in his first season at Tottenham, guiding them to a 4th place finish and securing a spot in the Champions League.

However, the current season has not gone according to plan, with the club getting knocked out of the League Cup, the FA Cup, and the Champions League, effectively ending their chances of winning a trophy this season.

And Jones believes that Conte’s departure is inevitable, and that the club will be looking for a fresh start at the end of the season.

    He told GiveMeSport:

“I don’t think it will change anything in terms of Conte’s future now.

“From every conversation I have, this is pretty much the point of no return and I don’t see how this can change.

“Conte was brought in to win a trophy and he hasn’t won a trophy. He wasn’t brought in to qualify for the top four and there are many managers that would have felt they could have delivered that. It does feel like it’s going to be time for a fresh start now.”

Conte’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and there are no plans for an extension, specially after his incredible rant post Southampton draw where he launched an attack on the Spurs players, accusing them of being selfish and targeting the Tottenham owners for being unambitious.

Tottenham are already looking for a new manager, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Thomas Tuchel, and Roberto De Zerbi all being linked with the job – the Argentine being the potential favourite.

Louis Saha claims Leeds star is destined to join Man Utd in summer

Louis Saha has said that he believes Illan Meslier could be Manchester United’s future first-choice goalkeeper in a few years’ time.

Saha, who played in the Premier League himself for United, spoke to Betfred on all things United recently and said that Meslier could well replace David De Gea once the Spaniard leaves his position at the club.

He could replace him, for sure. He’s a good goalkeeper, with a lot of talent and his profile reminds me of Thibaut Courtois. He’s a tall lad and even though he may need to improve his passing range, he’s decent with the ball and he’s good on his line.”

Meslier has made 116 appearances for Leeds since arriving in 2019

Saha also spoke about the pressure that comes with holding down the No.1 spot at United, saying the young Frenchman will need the perfect mentality if he is to take the position at Old Trafford.

“The number one spot at Manchester United comes with a lot more pressure than it does at Leeds United or Lorient, so it all depends on whether he has the right mentality to take on that spot in Manchester United’s team. He’s a big talent but there’s a long way to go for him.”

At just 22, Meslier still has a lot to learn as a goalkeeper but if he can continue performing as well as he does for Leeds, the sky is the limit.

Long Journey, Great Reward: Shevchenko Claims Tenerife Challenger

After suffering a first-round defeat in the Australian Open qualifying, Alexander Shevchenko took the long trip from Melbourne to Tenerife to compete at the ATP Challenger Tour event on the Canary Island.

Although the journey may have been halfway across the world, it paid off as the 22-year-old didn’t drop a set all week en route to claiming the Tenerife Challenger 1, where he downed Austrian Sebastian Ofner 7-5, 6-2 in the final.

“The final was very tough,” Shevchenko said. “I had to go more aggressive and also had to win some points playing defence. A lot of fun emotions that I will remember for the rest of my career.”

Shevchenko is coached by Gunter Bresnik, who has worked with prominent players such as Boris Becker, Patrick McEnroe, Dominic Thiem, and Gael Monfils.

After claiming his maiden Challenger title in Bratislava this past season, Shevchenko was a two-time semi-finalist in the latter half of 2022 (Milan, Szczecin). The Challenger 100 title in Tenerife lifts him to a career-high No. 116 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.

“I’m close [to the Top 100],” Shevchenko said. “But I’m not there, so I have to work hard from next week on, forget about this week, and start the new week.”

On the clay courts of Piracicaba, Andrea Collarini dispatched four of the Top-9 seeds, including World No. 102 Alejandro Tabilo, to win his first Challenger title since August 2019 (L’Aquila). The Argentine defeated Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera in the final 6-2, 7-6(1) to capture the Brasil Tennis Challenger.

“I can’t wait to celebrate with my wife and my family,” Collarini said. “I’m happy because I won a Challenger again. The last one was three years ago and this past year I reached two finals (Tigre-2, Vicenza) but I couldn’t win them. I’ve had good weeks and bad weeks. Now I’m happy because in those bad weeks I wondered if I would be able to win a tournament again, and I finally did.”

Following a record-setting 23 Challenger titles in 2022, players from Argentina are off to fast start to surpass their own milestone. Juan Manuel Cerundolo collected a pair of titles in the first two weeks of the season and now Collarini joins the fellow lefty as Argentine Challenger champions this month.

The title at the Challenger 75 event propels the 2010 Roland Garros boys’ singles finalist to a career-high 186 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.

At the Bangkok Open 3, Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro collected his maiden Challenger crown. En route to title, the 25-year-old took down top seed James Duckworth and ended Frenchman Arthur Cazaux’s 13-match winning streak in the final 6-2, 7-5.

Shimabukuro is building upon his career-best season in 2022, when he made his Davis Cup debut in September and narrowly escaped former World No. 33 Denis Istomin. The following month, Gifu native advanced through qualifying to compete in his maiden Tour-level tournament, the ATP 500 event in Tokyo.

Tottenham Hotspur are considering signing Morocco’s World Cup star Yassine ‘Bono’ Bounou as a replacement for the aging Hugo Lloris who has had a poor season so far.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, a new goalkeeper is high on Tottenham’s managing director Fabio Paratici’s list of priorities, and Galetti does not rule out the possibility of Tottenham attempting to sign Jordan Pickford from Goodison Park or attempting to tempt Bounou away from Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan following his impressive performance in the World Cup.

    He told GiveMeSport:

“Tottenham are exploring different options in all the roles for January and especially for the summer, starting with the goalkeeper.”

“We know that they opened talks with Lloris for his contract. But it cannot be excluded that Spurs can try for Jordan Pickford or Yassine Bounou.”

The Moroccan goalkeeper helped his country reach the semi-finals before losing to France and then Croatia in the third-place play-off.

He had an impressive record during the tournament, keeping three clean sheets and allowing only five goals over six outings.

Yassine Bounou was Morocco’s hero in the Qatar World Cup helping them reach the semi-finals

Spurs are not the only club interested in acquiring the services of the Moroccan, with West Ham manager David Moyes also said to be interested in the keeper as per the reports from La Razon.

West Ham, according to the report, see him as their next potential number 1 with the 37-year-old Fabianski out of contract in the summer.

Sevilla recently extended Bounou’s contract until June 2025 and increased his release clause from €30m to €50m, but they may be willing to negotiate for a lower offer. According to a report by Vamos Mi Sevilla, Sevilla are willing to sell Bounou in January for €30m.

This could be a great opportunity for Spurs to sign a talented and experienced goalkeeper who has proven himself on the international stage as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.
