    Yanis Beghdadi entend prouver

  • Last chance saloon for Doom

    Last chance saloon for Doom

I’m heading to the popular seaside town of Redcar for Wednesday’s NAP – a William Haggas-trained filly who looks to have been found a great opportunity to finally get off the mark.

What price would DOOM have opened if she wasn’t beaten at 1/25f in a two-runner race at Ripon a few weeks ago? 4/6? Shorter? I suspect the latter.

Maybe, after three seconds in a row, the three-year-old daughter of Dubawi has a bit of an attitude problem, but I’m inclined to say that’s a premature evaluation.

She can certainly be excused for a narrow defeat to subsequent Betfred Oaks winner Soul Sister in October last year – while Charlie Appleby’s Whispering Words, who beat the selection at Newmarket on her seasonal reappearance last month, is no mug.

Her latest effort is much harder to forgive. That being said, how many times have we witnessed such results? The fewer the runners, the trappier the contest – and the weirder the results. After all, the ‘back the outsider of three’ theory doesn’t exist for no reason. We also don’t know how good the Karl Burke debutant who beat her is just yet.

Unless any of the three newcomers set to contest this 7f maiden is above average, which doesn’t look the case on paper, then this is easily Doom’s easiest assignment to date and there can be no more excuses.

Of those with form in the book, Rising Bay is even less trustworthy than the selection. Likewise, Hills Of Gold is yet to win in seven starts and Forceful Spirit is 100/1 for a reason.

Jumeira Vision can’t be completely ruled out but he’d have to improve beyond recognition to take this – so I suppose that leaves Bustaam as the main danger, but even he’s uninspiring.

The bottom line? I’m expecting Cieren Fallon to get a tune out of Doom, for whom it’s a case of last chance saloon.

  • 7/2 chance can shine at Listowel on Wednesday

7/2 chance can shine at Listowel on Wednesday

Having penned a ‘Jumps Horses To Follow‘ piece earlier this week, I think I’ve come down with a touch of National Hunt fever so I’ve gone to Listowel on Wednesday for the NAP of the Day.

When JP McManus’ €315,000 purchase FOXFIRE GLOW lined up for a maiden hurdle at Down Royal’s November meeting that trainer Gordon Elliott farms, I don’t think anyone envisaged him taking in a handicap hurdle at Listowel off a mark of 121 almost a year later.

Clearly, things haven’t gone to plan for the son of Vadamos, who was touted by many as a novice hurdler to follow last term.

However, it appears a corner has been turned. Admittedly, a very wide corner with little traffic, but a corner nonetheless.

The French import finally got off the mark at Downpatrick in July, winning an eight-runner maiden by nearly three lengths with his nearest rival pulling over eight clear of the rest oft the field. It’s not strong form, but he clearly enjoyed the drastic step up in trip and the taste of success for he followed up with another victory at Tramore.

He was raised 8lbs for those exploits and now tries handicapping for the first time. I suspect the aforementioned rating of 121 might not stop this improving type, who also tries three miles for the first time.

I think further improvement can be expected, and that the five-year-old can land the hat-trick under regular rider Mark Walsh.

  • Hurricane Power has every chance

    Hurricane Power has every chance

Flat racing holds sway across the UK and Ireland on Monday with four meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening.

First off is Brighton before they go at Chepstow, Roscommon and Windsor.

Amongst our Monday fancies is one for trainer Robyn Brisland who went close on her recent seasonal return and remains unexposed at sprint distances.

    15:00 Brighton – Duely Spiced @ 3/1

Gay Kelleway’s filly DUELY SPICED has been runner-up in her two starts so far and can make it third time lucky by landing this Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over 6f at Brighton in the hands of Josephine Gordon.

The daughter of Due Diligence took second spot on debut at Windsor (6f, good to firm) in May and occupied the same berth at Lingfield (7f, soft) in early August behind Ambiente Amigo – the Michael Bell runner having shaped with lots of promise previously in a good contest at Newmarket.

Duely Spiced was no match for her, but having been headed, she showed a willing attitude in repelling the challenge of Royal Expert for the silver medal and that experience should stand to her now.

    16:20 Windsor – Hurricane Power @ 2/1

Look out for HURRICANE POWER at Windsor as the Paul & Oliver Cole-trained colt looks set to open his account on his third start.

The son of Exceed And Excel has improved in each of three racecourse appearances to this point and boasts the best form on offer coming into this British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes over 6f.

He looked a winner in waiting when narrowly edged out over this course and distance nine days ago, getting to the lead early after breaking alertly and battling all the way to the line having been challenged for that lead from two furlongs out.

Having looked held, he was only denied in a head-bob on the line as the judge was needed to separate the front two. Tom Marquand is back in the saddle for a stable in excellent form of late and, now back in a maiden, Hurricane Power looks a likely winner.

    16:30 Chepstow – Porterinthejungle @ 5/1

A former Chepstow course winner, Robyn Brisland’s PORTERINTHEJUNGLE can thrive back at the Monmouthshire course this afternoon.

The Bungle Inthejungle mare won here in the summer of 2021, one of five turf wins (5-27). Four of those wins have come over 7f but the most recent was over this trip at Windsor last October.

That was her first go at the minimum distance and, on her second attempt, she came within a whisker of going in again when returning from 304 days off over this course and distance.

She was away alertly in that contest and was strong through the line despite suffering some interference late in the contest.

From an unchanged mark and with the excellent Billy Loughnane in the saddle again, this mare is unexposed as a sprinter and, with that match sharpness now assured, she could prove tough to peg back this time.

Man United make surprise move for Premier League star with strong chance of signing the player

Man United are believed to still be in the market for an attacking right-back and the Manchester club have made a surprise move for a Premier League star.

According to Football Insider, United have made an enquiry for Wolves’ Nelson Semedo and could try to bring the 29-year-old in before the end of the transfer window. Contact has been made with the Molineux outfit over a potential deal as they have to sell more stars before the end of August to meet financial fair play restrictions.

This is a surprise move from Erik ten Hag as Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are already at the club. In addition to that, Semedo is not good enough to play for Man United and has shown various weaknesses throughout his career so far.

Nelson Semedo in action for Wolves

Semedo has a contract at Wolves until June 2025 and therefore, it is unknown how much the defender would cost Man United should they make a move.

The Portuguese star has started both of Wolves’ Premier League matches this season, one of which was a trip to Old Trafford. Ten Hag still needs to bring in a midfielder before the transfer window shuts and that is likely more of a priority for the Man United boss than the full-back position, but they do have a strong chance of landing the Wolves star if they make an official move.

  • In-demand Fulham star Joao Palhinha suffers suspected dislocated shoulder in pre-season clash with Brentford… potentially ending any chance of a £60m summer move

In-demand Fulham star Joao Palhinha suffers suspected dislocated shoulder in pre-season clash with Brentford… potentially ending any chance of a £60m summer move

Fulham star Joao Palhinha was forced off injured in his side’s pre-season friendly clash against Brentford on Sunday evening, sparking fears a summer move could be off the cards.

The Portuguese has been touted for a summer departure from Craven Cottage after an outstanding debut season in the Premier League, with West Ham being told they will have to pay £60m by Fulham.

However, an injury in pre-season could scupper those plans with Palhinha walking wounded on the stroke of half-time at the Lincoln Financial Field with his arm in a makeshift sling.

Palhinha contested for the ball near the centre circle but came off worse as he immediately hit the deck holding his shoulder in pain.

Team medics were quickly rushed onto the pitch as the 28-year-old writhed in agony with it obvious that he would no longer be able to carry on in the friendly clash.

Fulham star Joao Palhinha was forced off injured in his side’s pre-season friendly clash against Brentford on Sunday evening

Palhinha (middle) had his arm supported in a makeshift sling as he walked off the pitch

Fulham’s combative midfielder grimaced in agony as he got back to his feet and was escorted off by physios who will begin an in-depth investigation to discover the severity of his injury.

Palhinha’s left-arm was placed in a makeshift sling with his forearm propped up against his body by his shirt being rolled upwards.

He was escorted by a team of physios down the tunnel in Philadelphia and kept his arm positioned in it’s support throughout the venture back towards the changing room.

A serious injury could turn into disaster for both Palhinha and Fulham with a lengthy spell on the treatment table the only outcome if a dislocated shoulder is confirmed to be the problem.

Fulham boss Marco Silva revealed after the match that a scan will take place on Monday to discover the severity of his injury, stating: ‘Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good. It looks like he has dislocated his shoulder.

‘Tomorrow [Monday] he has a scan, hopefully it is not a long-term injury.’

Palhinha could require surgery if it is confirmed he has dislocated his shoulder

Shoulder dislocations often require surgery that is followed up by extensive rehabilitation in an effort to heal the damaged muscle and ligaments.

A sling is usually worn in the aftermath of surgery to prevent a recurrence and a full recovery can take up to six months, meaning Palhinha would miss the first half of the new Premier League season.

That would likely see interested parties look elsewhere for midfield alternatives with West Ham needing to find an immediate replacement for Declan Rice after he left to join Arsenal.

Palhinha was one of the English top-flight’s top performing midfielders last season and made 35 league appearances, scoring three goals as Fulham finished in the top half of the Premier League standings.

Real Madrid coach and legend Raul has rejected the chance to join Leeds United to replace Jesse Marsch as manager.

Raul is currently the manager of Real Madrid’s reserve side. The Spanish striker spent some of the best days of his playing career at Real Madrid, winning six league titles and three Champions Leagues.

Since retiring, Raul has returned to Madrid to manage their reserve side and could one day hope to manage the club he will go down as a legend for.

Raul is a legend at Real Madrid

Now, according to AS, Raul has rejected the chance to manage in the Premier League, with Leeds United making an approach after they sacked Marsch.

Marsch was sacked after a run of poor results despite keeping Leeds in the Premier League last season. The American replaced Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds were plummeting towards relegation, but after significant investment, they haven’t made much progress.

The report claims that Raul isn’t interested in joining a new club mid-season and with Leeds struggling towards the bottom of the Premier League, they’ll need to act fast in appointing a new manager.

Reports suggest that Liverpool passed on the opportunities to bolster their midfield on deadline day.

Sky Sports reported that in Manchester United’s bid to replace the injured Christian Eriksen, the club were offered the chance to sign Saul Niguez, Houssem Aouar and Marcel Sabitzer. They eventually opted for the latter, who completed a loan move from Bayern Munich.

That has led supporters to believe that Liverpool would have also been made aware that the players were available and open to January exits, especially as rumours circulated on the final days of the window that the board were scouring squads across Europe for potential signings.

    Liverpool’s transfer business

However, the club instead oversaw one of the quietest windows across the top flight and failed to acquire reinforcements in the one position they desperately needed to.

Their passiveness in winter could mean they are preparing for a hectic summer. Everybody knows that Jurgen Klopp’s top priority is Jude Bellingham, but he will face competition from several of Europe’s elite.

Everton were offered the chance to sign Chelsea winger Omari Hutchinson on loan but rejected the opportunity.

Everton ended the transfer window weaker than they started after they sold Anthony Gordon and failed to bring in a replacement.

Signing a wide player had to be a priority for Everton, even before Gordon left the club, with their current crop of wingers struggling to contribute in front of goal or create for others.

It’s now emerged that Everton were offered the chance to bring in an exciting young talent on deadline day, but rejected the chance. According to the Mirror, Chelsea offered former Arsenal youngster Hutchinson to Everton on loan, but the Merseyside club rejected the opportunity.

Hutchinson only has a handful of games in the Premier League so it’s understandable that Everton didn’t feel he was the right man to help them in a relegation battle.

However, just bringing bodies through the door would have been beneficial to Everton considering their lack of numbers, and maybe a young talent with a point to prove could have been a shrewd bit of business.
