West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is reportedly focusing on a potential summer transfer window move to Arsenal, though Dean Jones has suggested that Champions League football could also help Newcastle United enter the running.

The England international is now surely at the point where he needs to leave West Ham for a bigger club, with the 24-year-old yet to play in the Champions League or win a major trophy in his career so far.

Arsenal would do well to bring in Rice this summer, and have previously been strongly linked with him by CaughtOffside columnist Ben Jacobs, who stated that he could move for around £80million.

Newcastle also surely have the finances to compete for a player like Rice, and they’re not too far away now from sealing a place in the top four, which Jones believes could boost their hopes, even if the Gunners currently look like the favourites.

Declan Rice to Arsenal or Newcastle?

Speaking to Give Me Sport about Rice’s future, Jones said: “If they make the top four, obviously, it becomes more possible and they can join the conversation, but it still depends on the level of funding on such a deal.

“It will involve how the player himself views the project. It’s obviously an intriguing one, but from Declan Rice’s point of view, at the moment, all the focus is waiting for Arsenal to make an offer. That’s his preference. That’s what needs to happen first, and only once he knows the lay of the land on that one do I think he’ll really consider anything else.”

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has less than 18 months left on his current contract with the London club and the renewal talks have now stalled.

According to a report from Football Insider, the two parties are yet to reach an agreement regarding a renewal and Liverpool are hoping to take advantage of his situation and bring the 24-year-old to Anfield at the end of the season.

Mount has been an important player for Chelsea since breaking into the first-team scene and his departure would be a major blow for Chelsea. On the other hand, Liverpool are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements and the England international would be a superb acquisition for them.

The 24-year-old will add creativity and goals from the middle of the park and Jurgen Klopp could certainly use someone like him.

Players like Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Naby Keita are set to leave the club on a free transfer when their contract expires and Liverpool will need to bring in more than just one central midfielder at the end of the season.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount would also be a wise addition. The England international is well-settled in the Premier League and he could make an immediate impact at Anfield.

It remains to be seen whether Mount is prepared to leave his boyhood club and join a Premier League rival at the end of the season.

There is still ample time for Chelsea and Mount to come to an agreement regarding a contract renewal and the fans will certainly hope that an extension is signed in the coming months.

Liverpool have been handed a potential injury boost after leading transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed midfielder Arthur Melo could return to action by the end of the month.

Melo, 26, only joined the Reds from Juventus in the summer, but after picking up an untimely injury and requiring surgery, the 26-year-old has only managed one appearance.

Ahead of his loan, which is set to end at the end of the season, Melo, according to Romano, could finally rack up some game time after it was confirmed his latest round of tests will take place within the next ‘days to weeks’.

This will come as great news to manager Jurgen Klopp, who is now preparing for the Premier League’s restart on 26 December.

Entering a fiercely congested period of festive fixtures, Liverpool, like every club, will need the bulk of their squad fit and available, and Melo’s impending reintroduction back to first-team action will provide the German with at least one more quality option.

Rangers handed injury boost ahead of Ajax clash, GvB should be buzzing – opinion

Glasgow Rangers take to the Champions League stage this evening for the first time in almost 12 years.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Light Blues are in Amsterdam to take on four-time European champions Ajax.

The Ibrox club’s preparations for the match took a hit in confidence at the weekend as their Glasgow arch-rivals thrashed them at Parkhead to take advantage in the race for the Premiership crown.

However, Wednesday night’s clash represents an opportunity to return to form, and what better way to do it than by winning their first group stage match in Europe’s premier club competition since a 1-0 win against Bursaspor in December 2010.

Ahead of the game against Ajax, Ben Davies was spotted at Glasgow Airport boarding the flight to Amsterdam and it looks like he could be in the running for a spot in the team.

    Van Bronckhorst should be buzzing

The English defender was then pictured in training before the match, and it looks like he could be in contention for some game-time in Amsterdam.

Davies arrived at Ibrox in the summer from Liverpool for a fee of £4m, but he hasn’t had the impact that some supporters might have expected. In his first start for the club, he came off with a knock and has missed the subsequent Champions League qualifiers and the Old Firm clash.

Connor Goldson and James Sands have been the centre-back pairing ever since, but the Gers have conceded nine goals in the last six matches and it may be time for Van Bronckhorst to make a change at the heart of the defence.

Goldson and Sands received SofaScore ratings of 6.7 and 6.8 respectively on Saturday, but the pair were torn to shreds by Celtic’s relentless nature and quickfire attacking play. The duo lost possession 23 times combined, and with an Ajax front three likely consisting of Steven Bergwijn, Brian Brobbey and Dusan Tadic, Van Bronckhorst won’t want his defenders caught napping again.

If the 47-year-old does wish to change up his backline this evening, then he will be buzzing to have Davies available.
