Things have been going wonderfully well for Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal side this season, and with nine games left of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, the Gunners are still sitting pretty atop the English top-flight.

Moment of the season so far has to be the 97th minute winner from Reiss Nelson which saw Arsenal come back from 2-0 down against Bournemouth to win 3-2.

It was a strike fit to win any game, and one which sent the Emirates Stadium into total delirium.

With Manchester City still breathing down their necks in the race for the title, the importance of that goal can’t be understated either.

Nelson will rightly have lapped up the adulation at the time, and if those three points help Arsenal to the title, he can be proud of playing his part.

Reiss Nelson celebrates scoring for Arsenal

He’ll start next season facing a criminal trial, however, something that is likely to have brought him crashing back down to earth.

According to the Daily Mail, Nelson will on trial in September after his dog, Tiago, allegedly attacked a massage therapist, Saeid Motaali, in 2020, leaving him injured.

Although it would appear that Nelson has denied the allegation, to have this hanging over his head at a time when he could be about to celebrate one of the finest moments of his professional career isn’t the best turn of events.

For the time being, Arteta will surely hope that his player isn’t distracted by the issue and can still focus on getting the Gunners over the line.

  • blow for Xavi for a defensive priority?

blow for Xavi for a defensive priority?

Zapping World Eleven EXCLUDED: Youssouf Fofana’s “Little brother” interview!

This summer, Barça has a clearly announced priority for its transfer window: recruiting a high-level right-back. Unfortunately, with limited financial means, they won’t be spoiled for choice! Xavi would be tempted to attract the Argentinian from Villarreal Juan Foyth but the Catalan board already knows that his release clause will be very (too) high. Villarreal demand more than 60 million to let go of their 24-year-old side

The Blaugrana had already tried an approach last summer, offering 25 million euros to the yellow submarine to poach the defender. Villarreal refused. A loan with a higher purchase option was also offered, but no agreement was reached. Foyth’s injury at the end of August put an end to the negotiations.

Barça will have to look for a fallback solution, especially since the main interested party seems to want to stay in Villarreal.

Besides Foyth, the Catalans have Thomas Meunier, Joao Cancelo and Benjamin Pavard in their sights. Problem: the Frenchman has already announced that he did not like playing this position too much and that he wanted to continue the adventure at Bayern. The Cancelo option might be the best from a value for money point of view, but for that, the player would have to drop his option to buy Bayern and be loaned out again by City. Quite unlikely therefore.

The Vanderson track, which the Blaugrana liked a lot last summer, seems to have taken the lead in the wing.

    To sum up

Liverpool have been dealt a double injury blow as both Joe Gomez and Darwin Nunez will take a stint on the sidelines.

Both players were ruled out of this evening’s trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.

Prior to kick-off, Jurgen Klopp said via the club website: “They are both injured. So, Darwin had the shoulder problem from the Newcastle game. [It] worked out for the Real Madrid game but then [he] got another knock there, felt it again and more so there was no chance for today. Hopefully he can be [back] in midweek again.”

Gomez and Nunez have been consistent starters in recent weeks, with the latter being one standout performer in a deflated Liverpool side. He opened the scoring midweek against Real Madrid with an outstanding backheel finish, though the tie ultimately ended 5-2 in the reigning European champions’ favour.

    Next up for Liverpool

Their absences will spark concern among supporters as the Merseyside club host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday at Anfield. Given the club’s current placement and form, three points are crucial to their top-four pursuit.

Klopp’s side then face in-form rivals Manchester United on March 4 and the Red Devils will be keen on securing a Premier League double over Liverpool after picking up a 2-1 win in August.

  • Big blow for France as Karim Benzema limps out of training just a day before the World Cup

Big blow for France as Karim Benzema limps out of training just a day before the World Cup

France could be without star striker Karim Benzema for their opening fixture against Australia.

L’Equipe (via Get French Football News), had reported that Ballon d’Or winner is suffering from hamstring and knee strains. And those reports turned out to be true when he limped out of the training session on Saturday.

And he is not the only Frenchman who is an injury concern for the reigning World champions. Their long list of injured players includes Ngolo Kante, Paul Pogba, Presnel Kimpembe, and Mike Maignan, who have all been ruled out of selection.

Manchester United’s Raphael Varane and Barcelona’s Jules Kounde are also a doubt for the opening game as they continue to recover from their injuries.

If Benzema fails to recover in time, Didier Deschamps will have to turn to AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud who has an excellent record for the national team. He is only two goals short of Thierry Henry’s record of 51, which the former Arsenal and Chelsea man will be aiming for in Qatar.

He was also the leading striker in France’s 2018 World Cup campaign playing a huge role in their triumph. That year Benzema was not selected for the squad due to the off-the-pitch controversies involving him and former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

Benzema limped out of the training session on Saturday

Benzema’s injury will be a huge blow for France considering the form that the striker is in. Benzema led Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double last season, scoring 44 goals in 46 games. And his incredible season culminated in him winning the Ballon d’Or in October, ahead of Sadio Mane and Kevin de Bruyne.
