Atletico can land a rare victory

Our Football Bet of the Day column takes a trip to Brazil this Thursday as we’ve found an interesting odds against price from the Palmeiras vs Atlético Mineiro game that we think is worth a flutter…

Atletico Mineiro have a miserable recent record against Palmeiras but there are plenty of reasons to expect a better outcome for the visitors in their latest Brazilian Serie A clash on Thursday.

The Belo Horizonte side have hit some decent form recently and look to be taking on Palmeiras at the right time.

The Sao Paulo giants are handily placed in third but are in danger of falling off the pace following a poor run of results, and things may get even worse this week.

There are 12 rounds remaining in the Brazilian Serie A season and Botafogo remain the team to beat with a healthy lead at the top of the standings.

They have a nine-point advantage over RB Bragantino, but there are a host of teams tightly positioned in the chasing pack, looking to seal qualification for the Copa Libertadores.

Just six points separate second-placed Bragantino and Atletico Mineiro in ninth, and a frenetic finish can be expected to the Serie A campaign.

Palmeiras’s form has fallen off a cliff in recent weeks and they could drop out of the qualification places if they can’t turn around their fortunes quickly.

They have won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions and could find themselves out of the top six following this next round of matches.

Mineiro are one of the sides looking to pounce this week. They have a miserable record against Palmeiras, having failed to win in the last ten meetings, but they have looked lively in recent weeks and can approach this latest clash with plenty of confidence.

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men have won six of their last ten league matches and have opened the scoring in each of their last six outings. Bagging the first goal again could be crucial on Thursday and, if Mineiro can strike quickly, a rare victory could be on the cards.

Palmeiras look a fragile bunch at the moment and that has been reflected in their lack of goals. They have failed to score more than one goal in any of their last nine fixtures, and it is fair to say this could be a tight encounter.

Each of the last five meetings between these two have failed to yield more than three goals, while under 2.5 goals has copped in nine of Atletico’s last ten matches.

It’s 8/13 about that outcome again this week but the 7/4 about an Atletico Mineiro win with the draw no bet looks a much better value option given the current form of the two teams.

The pair have met three times already this season and there have been just three goals scored in those matches, which finished 0-0, 1-1 and 1-0 to Palmeiras, and it’s not hard to envisage a similar result in this latest tussle.

However, it may be a rare occasion where Atletico Mineiro get to celebrate for a change.

Lively, the Madrid derby between Altético and Real saw two teams go blow for blow on the lawn of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and this in every sense of the word. This is what earned Angel Correa an expulsion shortly after the hour mark (64th). The Argentinian who entered at the break was penalized for an elbow on Antonio Rüdiger. A decision by Jesus Gil Manzano confirmed by video arbitration, but who is really struggling to go to the Colchoneros side. After the meeting, the club’s twitter account notably published a photo of Angel Correa who, it seems, was the victim of scratches.

Decisive passer for José Maria Giménez, Antoine Griezmann was measured at the microphone of bein Sportsbut lamented the decision: “Red welded us together. We had to work for each other. But it’s a shame, I think the referee had control of the match and in the end he gets tricked by Militao. That’s how it is, it’s football.” If the Frenchman prefers above all to retain the positive, his teammate Stefan Savic unpinned at the microphone of DAZN : “we were angry because we couldn’t win at the end, we came here to look for victory. Today, it could not have been played on an equal basis again, I don’t know why, but it always happens.

Simeone and Oblak bang their fists on the table!

A posture in the face of arbitration also held by his coach Diego Simeone: “it could be yellow, but if you send off a player for this situation, there would be no more players on the field. In our case it becomes normal and it would be nice if we could all play the same […] the expulsion, can be interpreted with the vision of the referee who is close to the game and the movement of Correa, but there is also the VAR and we have the possibility of seeing that the contact does not have the necessary violence to knock a player down the field. We don’t know if he (the referee, editor’s note) was called up or not (by the VAR, editor’s note). Rudiger is tall, Correa is short…”

A two-speed arbitration, such is the posture of Atlético de Madrid, which considers that it has been wronged and not for the first time against Real Madrid. The Slovenian goalkeeper of the Matellasiers, Jan Oblak was also sharp in his words and sent a hell of a tackle: “In the last five derbies, we got a red card. Next time we may start directly with one less player. Strange things are happening lately.” Badly digesting this result, Atlético de Madrid can nevertheless be satisfied with a good production on this match and a positive dynamic of result. There is no doubt, however, that this may be a little light to cool particularly scalded spirits…

Before the Madrid derby on Sunday, Atletico Madrid fans were recorded racially insulting Real Madrid’s Brazil player Vinicius Junior outside their Metropolitano Stadium.

Hundreds of Atletico supporters could be heard singing “Vinicius, you are a monkey, you are monkey” in a video posted on social media by radio station Cope in the run-up to the game, which Real won 2-1.

Throughout the game, local media reported hearing monkey noises and yells of “Vinicius, die.”

Atletico Madrid did not reply quickly to a request for comment, but tweeted: “Support Atleti with passion and respect for opponents.”

Last week, Pedro Bravo, the president of the Spanish Football Agents Association, was chastised for telling Vinicius to quit “monkeying around” when celebrating goals, with a number of Brazilian athletes, including Neymar and Dani Alves, calling the remarks racist.

Bravo explained that the remark was not meant to be regarded as racist, but rather was a typical turn of phrase in Spanish.

Vinicius and Real, on the other hand, both issued comments condemning the racial insults the player has seen throughout his career.
