Sevilla Still Looking for a Win in 2022-23 La Liga

For three seasons in a row, Sevilla FC finished in the #4 place in the Spanish La Liga. Judging by what we’ve seen so far from these guys in the 2022-23 season, finishing so high in the standings is going to be a challenge.

Sevilla FC is currently in 15th place with just one point after three rounds and a score differential of 3-5. They got their only point of the season in Round 2 when they drew 1-1 with Valladolid at home. That’s an embarrassing result, knowing that Valladolid played in the second tier of the Spanish soccer league system last season.

The obvious question is what’s behind Sevilla’s poor run? No one can say for sure, but we can tell you what’s not the reason why this team’s been underachieving – the player quality.

Sevilla remains one of the best Spanish teams in terms of player talent, with most of their key men from the last season remaining on the roster. In fact, Sevilla’s roster looks even stronger than last year. Maybe the reason behind their poor run is that things just haven’t clicked yet.

Unfortunately for Sevilla, even if they do, winning points this weekend is not going to be easy. Why? Because their next opponent is Barcelona.

Barcelona Going for the Title in 2022-23

Three rounds into the 2022-23 season of the Spanish La Liga and Barcelona is one of only five undefeated teams. Unfortunately for them, they did drop points against Rayo Vallecano in the first round, playing 0-0 at home.

However, since the season opener, Barca players have been fantastic. They won the next two games, scoring a total of eight goals along the way, while conceding just one.

Their new signing Robert Lewandowski was the man in the spotlight in both of those wins. He put away two goals in Barca’s 4-1 win against Real Sociedad in round 2, as well as two goals in the 4-0 win over Valladolid last Sunday.

The other four goals Barca’s scored in the 2022-23 season were the work of four different players – Pedri, Sergi Roberto, Ousmane Dembele, and Ansu Fati.

Everything seems to be going in Barcelona’s favor ahead of the trip to Seville. The visitors are in top shape and seem to be loving their life at the moment. It’s just the opposite when it comes to Sevilla players, who are under a lot of pressure to win at least a point.

TransUnion is one of the largest credit agencies and recently it released its quarterly Credit Industry Insights Report (CIIR) for the second quarter of 2022, along with a very interesting online sports betting study that focuses on “Consumer Liquidity and Gaming Participation” in the US market for the same period.

Rising Inflation Effects on Bettors

The report starts off by focusing on the effects of rising inflation on household savings, which have apparently reverted to around pre-pandemic levels. This has an obvious knock-on effect on the available overall budget, meaning there’s also less money going around for entertainment activities such as online sports betting. According to the report, savings are now sitting at 6.3%, close to 2019’s 8.7% – a stark contrast to the peak of almost 34% during the pandemic.

Couple this with rising gas prices and strong fears of recession, and you get the recipe for a change in consumer behavior that easily impacts the gambling industry. To find the correlation between consumer liquidity and the industry’s performance, TransUnion developed the “US Consumer Liquidity Index”. The results suggest that there’s a clear connection between the liquidity index and the gaming index.

The report states that “current and incoming economic headwinds are likely to negatively impact the gaming industry.” This means that by understanding the microeconomics and how they affect the overall economic climate, operators can also get an insight into expected player behavior, allowing for the development of more targeted projections for where the industry is headed on a larger scale.

Affordability Checks Needed

Another factor that’s affecting the betting share of a customer’s wallet is debt. The research has found that the rate at which a player is paying off debt is increased versus the average for the total population. However, it appears that this is somewhat offset by the fact that online sports bettors also show signs of increased usage of credit and dip into their savings more often. On the whole, this leads to a bit more dynamic wallet allocation.

This dynamism also affects sports bettors’ attitude towards their own abilities to cover bills and loans in general. Compared to the total population’s 11%, a total of 16% of sports bettors fear they will not be able to cover their credit card, and 9% of sports bettors fear the same for their personal loans, compared to the total population’s 4%.

As you can imagine, this also elevates the levels at which sports bettors are turning to open new credit cards to cover their bills and loans – 15%, to be precise, compared to only 5% of the total population. The story is the same with personal loans, with 16% of sports bettors ready to take out personal loans to cover bills and other loans, compared to only 6% of the total population. This creates a situation in which 66% of online sports bettors have responded “Yes” when asked if they’ve been in a “past due status for any bill or loan payments for 90 days or longer in the past 12 months”, compared to only 31% in the total population.

This makes affordability checks crucial for gaming operators, the research suggests, saying that those that “incorporate robust consumer insights” into their strategies will be better equipped to identify “risky behavior”. Another great outcome of integrating affordability checks is that it will be hugely socially beneficial, too, helping to “enhance responsible gaming”. And we all know that responsible gaming is the only sustainable gaming there is.

Gamzix has only been in operation for two years, yet it has already amassed a sizable gaming catalog. It has also developed a distinct strategy for its games. Reinventing Kyrgios: ‘I Almost Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore’

I want to do it together,” Kyrgios said. “I’m definitely a perfectionist on the court. I feel like I can play like four or five great points, then I play one point and I’m going nuts. Kyrgios will be the first to admit he did not always do everything within his power to succeed on Tour. But that has changed this season, when Kyrgios has shown greater focus.

“This year’s been amazing in so many different ways. For my tennis, I kind of wanted to almost reinvent myself, get back to the top of the game where I know I belong,” Kyrgios said. “The Wimbledon final was a turning point I think for me mentally. If I won that match, I don’t know where my motivation would have been at. Losing it and being so close, it was really tough for me to kind of swallow that.”

Kyrgios was concerned that if he won Wimbledon, the pressure would be off. But if anything, falling short against Novak Djokovic in his first Grand Slam final has added fuel to the fire.

“I didn’t think I’d be putting this amount of pressure on myself. Every day I come in, I watch what I eat, I try and get sleep. Like every practice session I try and have good intent,” Kyrgios said. “I almost don’t know who I am anymore, to be honest, because that’s not me. Trying to balance so many different things out. It’s hard as well. The media, the fans are crazy everywhere I go. I’m trying to balance my personal life as well as my tennis. It’s just a lot.

“I feel like I’m really professional right now. I never thought that the Wimbledon final would make me that way. I thought it would be the other way, the reverse, almost a bit lax and a bit chilled with it.”

The Australian will play American J.J. Wolf on Friday for a place in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. If Kyrgios wins, he could play Medvedev in a fourth-round blockbuster.

The top seed ousted Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows for the fifth consecutive year. He has now won 20 of his past 22 matches at the year’s final major.

“In general I’m happy with my level in the third set, so that’s great. At the end of the match it was getting better and better,” Medvedev said. “At the same time a win is the most important, three sets. Try to get out as early as possible even if it is pretty late. Medvedev will next play China’s Wu Yibing, with the prospect of a fourth-round blockbuster against Australian Nick Kyrgios if they both win their next match.

The World No. 1 consistently threatened Rinderknech’s serve, converting five of the 17 break points he earned. Medvedev also saved all three break points he faced to advance after two hours and 11 minutes.

“The most important is to win, to stay in the tournament, to try to get as far as possible, for sure try to raise your level when the opponents go stronger and stronger,” Medvedev said. “Finally you’re going to play somebody who has a Grand Slam or something like this.”

Fast-rising Briton Jack Draper has stunned US Open sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in a result that has implications for their respective Milan and Turin qualification hopes.

Draper’s 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over the Canadian Wednesday night further strengthens his commanding lead in fifth spot in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Milan as he closes in on a debut appearance at the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals from 8-12 November.

The result also deals a blow to 2021 US Open semi-finalist Auger-Aliassime’s quest to make his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals. The 22-year-old is sixth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin and had the opportunity to put distance between himself and rivals, including Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz, with a deep run at Flushing Meadows. Now he is at risk of seeing last year’s Turin qualifiers pass him in the Race this fortnight.

“Obviously Felix is an incredibly tough opponent, that’s why he’s at the top of the game,” Draper said. “I played a really good match today, a special occasion out here.”

Making his US Open debut, Draper claimed his second win over a Top-10 player Wednesday, backing up his victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Montreal earlier this month.

Despite making less than half of his first serves, the Briton’s heavy delivery troubled Felix when put in play; the Brit won 36/43 first-serve points. The 20-year-old displayed wide variety from the baseline, including two backhand passing shots to break Felix’s serve in the second and third sets. The Canadian No. 1 only saw three break points – all while Draper was serving for the opening set – but failed to convert. Felix also struggled to find consistency during extended rallies, finishing with 41 unforced errors.

The left-handed Draper, 9-2 in his past 11 matches, rises to No. 46 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, a vast improvement from 12 months ago, when the youngster was No. 272.

“I’ve put in a lot of hard work the last few years. I’ve been unfortunate with injuries at a young age, I grew very quickly. I always had the tennis abilities, it’s been about staying fit and staying on court.”

Draper joins countrymen Cameron Norrie and Andy Murray in the third round at Flushing Meadows. Daniel Evans will attempt to become the fourth Briton in the third round when he meets Australian James Duckworth Thursday.
