    With the pressure on, Andrey Rublev stepped up and delivered Saturday, clawing past Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 2-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-6(10-7) in a US Open thriller.

    In a mammoth clash on Grandstand, the ninth seed battled through an epic 10-minute game on serve to clinch the fourth set. He then recovered from squandering three match points on serve at 5-4 in the decider, eventually advancing after four hours and 10 minutes to reach the fourth round in New York for the fourth time.

    The 24-year-old fired 38 winners and let out a roar after sealing his hard-earned win on his fifth match point. Rublev also survived in five sets in his first-round match against Laslo Djere and now holds a 2-1 record in deciding-set matches at the hard-court major.

    The 24-year-old has improved to 3-2 in his ATP Head2Head series against the Canadian and will next play seventh-seeded Briton Cameron Norrie after the 26-year-old downed Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.

    If Rublev can overcome Norrie, he will equal his best performance in New York. The ninth seed enjoyed runs to the quarter-finals in 2017 and 2020, defeating Matteo Berrettini en route to the last eight two years ago.

    Rublev is up to sixth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin following his standout Match Tie-break victory. He has lifted tour-level trophies in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade this season and is seeking his maiden Grand Slam crown this fortnight in New York.

    Cameron Norrie maintained his perfect record at this year’s US Open on Saturday, overcoming #NextGenATP Dane Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the fourth round in New York for the first time.

    The seventh-seeded Briton defeated Benoit Paire and Joao Sousa in straight sets in his opening two matches and looked in control again against Rune. Norrie fired 22 winners, struck his groundstrokes consistently and soaked up the 19-year-old’s heavy-hitting to advance after two hours and 13 minutes.

    “Holger is not easy. He can go through patches where he is playing pretty passively and then he hits aggressively, so you have to be ready for anything,” Norrie said. “He has great hands and defends really well at times. I think I stayed a lot calmer than he did throughout the big moments in the match.

    “My goal today was to get to two hours and then start the match from then. When it hit two hours I broke to go 2-1 in the third and I pointed to Facu and said, ‘Now the match starts’…I feel great.”

    The 26-year-old has improved to 3-0 in his ATP Head2Head series against Rune, having defeated the Munich champion in Cincinnati last month. Norrie, who is making his sixth appearance at the hard-court major, will next play ninth seed Andrey Rublev or 19th seed Denis Shapovalov.

    Norrie arrived in New York in good form after he advanced to the semi-finals in Cincinnati, where he lost to eventual champion Borna Coric. The four-time tour-level titlist is up to No. 11 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin as he looks to finish the season strongly and qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in November.

    In a tight first set, Norrie recovered from squandering two set points at 5-3 and a break advantage as he regained his focus to eventually clinch the opener after 49 minutes when Rune hit a forehand long. The seventh seed forced the Dane into errors in the second set with his watertight groundstrokes before he committed just one unforced error in the third set to race away to victory.

    Rune, who is fourth in the Pepperstone Live Race To Milan, was aiming to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the second time after he enjoyed a dream run to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in June.

    Top seed and defending champion Daniil Medvedev has set a blockbuster fourth-round US Open showdown with red-hot Australian Nick Kyrgios after defeating China’s Wu Yibing in the early hours of Saturday morning at Flushing Meadows.

    Beginning the match close to 11pm after Serena William’s pulsating three-hour final match against Ajla Tomljanovic inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, Medvedev dismissed Wu 6-4 6-2 6-2 to reach the second week for the fourth consecutive year.
    After Medvedev won a 35-shot rally – the longest of the tournament – to avoid dropping serve in the final game of the second set, the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals champion raced to the finish line, closing out the match in one hour, 55 minutes.

    Medvedev will put his World No. 1 Pepperstone ATP Ranking on the line against Kyrgios, who defeated the 26-year-old last month at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, where he extended his ATP Head2Head lead over Medvedev to 3-1. The 2021 US Open champion currently finds himself behind Rafael Nadal in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings and will surrender his No. 1 crown after the tournament if he falls to Kyrgios.

    “We’ve played great matches. I think all have been quite tight on the scoreboard,” Medvedev said. “It’s 3-1 to him but I will try to do better this time and it will be a great match for people to watch.”

    Attempting to become the first player to win back-to-back US Opens since Roger Federer won five straight between 2004-08, Medvedev has advanced to the fourth round without dropping a set in the first week. He is also seeking his third appearance in the final at Flushing Meadows, having pushed Nadal to five sets in the 2019 title match.

    Medvedev has spent a total of 16 weeks at World No. 1 since February.

    Wu is the first Chinese man in the history of the tournament (since 1881) to reach the third round. He has moved to a career-high No. 129 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings as he continues his battle with countryman Zhang Zhizhen (120) to become the first Chinese man to crack the Top 100.

    Former US Open champion and World No. 1 Andy Murray remains determined to keep working his way back to the top of the men’s game, inspired by some positive signs in a gruelling four-set loss to Matteo Berrettini at Flushing Meadows Friday.

    “I want to push and see how far I can go,” Murray said after the 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3 loss.

    “I think I’m improving this year. You know, my ranking, I don’t even know what I was at the beginning of the year, but I’m now around 40-ish in the world and still going hard.

    “That will be motivational for me and interesting to see, because lots of people told me I wouldn’t be able to play again, and lots of people told me I’d be able to hit tennis balls but not compete professionally again. That was nonsense, and I want to see how close I can get back to the top of the game. That’s what the motivation is.”

    In Friday’s three hour, 47 minute encounter with Berrettini, Murray felt the Italian’s serve was the difference maker. Berrettini fired 18 aces to Murray’s four and won 90/131 points off his heavy first delivery.

    “I served pretty poorly for a large part of the match, which hurt me a lot… I hung in really well in the third set and could see from the stats and stuff that were coming up that when I was getting into rallies I was getting comfortably the better of those exchanges when I got past the first few shots.

    “He served extremely well, got loads of free points on his serve. I didn’t. That was the difference.”

    The two-time Olympic gold medallist departs from New York as the World No. 43 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. Since Wimbledon 2017, when Murray was competing as defending champion and World No. 1, the Brit’s hip procedures have impacted his movement.

    Despite playing with a metal hip, Murray is poised to continue competing on the ATP Tour. Having not been within the Top 40 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings since his extended injury break in 2017, he believes there is nothing stopping him from getting to the level he was at five years ago.

    “A lot of the things feel the same, but obviously I’m just not quite capable of the sort of movement and physicality that I was five, six years ago. I mean, that’s pretty obvious. I shouldn’t expect to be.

    “I think if you watch Rafa and Novak moving around the court now, who are similar age, I think they’re moving pretty similar to how they were five, six years ago, whereas for me there’s obviously been a bit of a drop-off there. That can affect you in terms of how you have to play the points. Maybe you just don’t track as many balls down as before. Maybe the reach isn’t just quite as much as it was. But in terms of the shots and everything, there is nothing that is stopping me from hitting the same shots as I did before.”

    Murray leaves New York boasting a 22-15 record in 2022, the most wins he’s claimed in a season since collecting 25 wins in 2017. The 35-year-old is next due to play Davis Cup in his hometown, Glasgow, beginning 14 September and will also compete for Team Europe at the Laver Cup 23-25 September.

    The electrifying Aussie charged into the fourth round of the US Open Friday night with plenty of flair and exaggerated celebrations, but with far fewer of his bad-boy antics during a largely focussed 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win over American J. J. Wolf.

    The Wimbledon finalist could next meet World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in a blockbuster match Sunday as he attempts to reach the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows for the first time.

    The 23rd seed fended off all seven break points he faced, including three at 0/40 in his opening service game of the third set, needing one hour, 54 minutes to sail to victory in front of raucous fans on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

    Both players entertained the crowd as they engaged in a tug-of-war contest from the baseline, including several passing shots that raised fans to their feet. Kyrgios struck 21 aces en route to victory, often painting the lines and hitting his targets at ease.

    Kyrgios, who improves to 34-9 this season and is 13-2 since his maiden Grand Slam final at the All England Club, has already moved up three places this week to No. 22 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. Should he advance to the quarter-finals, the 27-year-old would return to the Top 20 for the first time since February 2020.

    The Canberra native is inching closer towards regaining his status as the Australian No. 1, a mark that Alex de Minaur currently holds as No. 19 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.

    Wolf, who upset 16th seed Roberto Bautista Agut on day one, equalled his career-best Grand Slam result by reaching the third round this week in New York.

    Kyrgios conquered the third round at the season’s final Slam for the first time in five tries Friday night. He will next face the winner of Medvedev and Wu Yibing Sunday.

    Defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury backed up their comfortable first-round victory with another dominant performance Friday, defeating Aslan Karatsev and Luke Saville 6-4, 6-3. 

    Top seeds Ram and Salisbury have collected two titles this season: Monte-Carlo and Cincinnati. Should they claim back-to-back titles at Flushing Meadows, the duo would claim its third major title (Australian Open ‘20, US Open ‘21). They will meet Italians Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini in the third round.

    Poland’s Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinsk won 45/51 points off their first serve to upset 2016 US Open champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares 7-6(2), 7-6(8).

    The Polish duo held its nerve to fend off three set points in the second set to claim a spot in the third round at Flushing Meadows.

    Ariel Behar and Gonzolo Escobar rallied from a set down in a marathon two hour, 26 minute upset over seventh seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(10-5).

    Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, seeded 12th, were also ousted in Friday’s action, falling to Philipp Oswald and Robin Haase 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3.

    Vitas Gerulaitis said that after snapping a 16-match losing streak against Jimmy Connors at the 1979 year-end Masters at Madison Square Garden. Gasquet will hope to say, “Nobody beats Richard Gasquet 18 times in a row” on Saturday when he faces Nadal in the third round of the US Open.

    Based on history, the Frenchman will have a lot to overcome against the 22-time major winner. Nadal has not just won their 17 ATP Head2Head clashes — he has done so convincingly.

    The Spaniard has not lost a set against Gasquet since 2008 in Canada, and has claimed 31 consecutive sets in their rivalry. Only two of those sets have gone to a tie-break, and 20 of the 31 have been decided by a margin of 6-3 or greater.

    Gasquet is not a low-ranked player whom Nadal has just happened to face many times. The Frenchman has won 582 tour-level matches, good for fifth-most among active players. The only active players who have won more are the “Big Four” of Roger Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

    Gasquet has won 15 ATP Tour titles, reached a career-high No. 7 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings and earned 35 victories against Top 10 opponents. None of those have come against Nadal. 

    During Gerulaitis’ 16-match losing streak against Connors, he won seven sets. Gasquet has claimed four sets against Nadal, with the most recent coming when World No. 4 Carlos Alcaraz was five years old.

    Gasquet and Nadal, both 36, have been linked since before they were teens. There is a famous video of them playing at the age of 12 at Les Petits As, a premier junior tournament in which Gasquet defeated Nadal.

    “The comparison was not that long… when we were 13, 14, but when we got [to] 18, the comparison was not there anymore,” Gasquet once said. “That’s a bit of a problem that there was a comparison with Rafa Nadal, but there was.”

After that, Nadal has beaten Karen Khachanov, Pablo Carreno Busta and Jarkko Nieminen eight times each without suffering a loss against any of them.

    Nadal has enjoyed lopsided rivalries against many more of his contemporaries, but those are men against whom he has tasted defeat. Examples include his 26-6 record against Spaniard David Ferrer, 20-4 mark against Czech Tomas Berdych and 19-3 record against Swiss Stan Wawrinka. All three of those men cracked the Top 5 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

    For now, Nadal will focus on extending his winning streak against Gasquet to 18, with a place in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows at stake.

    The tennis world is remembering longtime ATP chair umpire and tournament supervisor Paulo Pereira, who passed away earlier this month.

    After 32 years with the ATP, including 2,540 professional matches officiated and more than 360 tournaments supervised, the Brazilian stepped down from his position as supervisor in 2013 but remained involved in the sport.

    “I do not want to stop working with sports, mainly tennis, but I’m looking for new challenges, because to stop would be to leave behind a piece of myself with each passing year,” Pereira said at the time. “I want to stay active, looking for opportunities to help others with everything I have learned in all my years on the Tour.”

    Internationally known and highly regarded for his work on behalf of the sport of tennis, he was a popular figure in his travels and considered the strong relationships he developed the most meaningful aspect of his tenure.

    “Throughout my time with ATP, I’ve made many friends, among them my colleagues, tournament directors, players and coaches, and this means more to me than any other accomplishments that I have attained from the sport,” he added.

    A supervisor for 15 years from 1998-2013, Pereira’s next chapter saw him serve as the Sao Paolo ATP 250 tournament director in 2014. He also held other roles in the Rules & Competition department after leaving his full-time post, including a role as a designation coordinator.

    Pereira, who began a career in civil engineering prior to his work in tennis, said he was “permanently seduced” by the world of sport, which caused him to abandon that path in favour of a full-time commitment to tennis.

    He is survived by his wife Marisa.

    Fifth seed Casper Ruud held his nerve in a five-set battle against home favourite Tommy Paul Friday, punching his ticket into the fourth round of the US Open after claiming a 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-0 victory.

    Ruud, 10-2 in his past 12 matches, is the first Norwegian man to reach the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows and is one of four players (Medvedev, Nadal, Alcaraz) who can claim the World No. 1 Pepperstone ATP Ranking on 12 September.

    “We both were playing well,” Ruud said. “Whenever someone broke, the other guy seemed to break back right away, so it was tough to get the lead and keep going with it. We were always close on the scoreline. It seemed like the only time I could break him was when I was broken first, so that’s not a good sign, but in the fifth set I played some of my best tennis this year and the best tennis I’ve played this tournament.”

    Needing four hours, 23 minutes to outlast the American, Ruud emerged as the fresher of the two, as Paul was playing his third consecutive five-set match (d. Zapata Miralles, Korda).

    “It’s not everyday you surpass playing four hours on court, but that’s what we train for, we work hard for it,” Ruud said. “I will try to be fresh for Sunday.”

    A crucial tipping point in the match came in the third set, when the Norwegian fended off three consecutive set points with Paul serving at 6/5, 40/0 to take a two-sets-to-one lead. Ruud took the third set in a tie-break and despite dropping the fourth, used his fresher legs to pull away in the decider..

    Paul, who reached the 2015 US Open boys’ singles final (l. Fritz), frequently worked his forward, winning 38/62 net points. Ruud had the edge in longer baseline exchanges, making 32 fewer unforced errors than Paul’s 82.

    Ruud, 23, is having the best season of his career. In June, he reached his maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros before falling short to Rafa Nadal. Now with a chance to claim the No. 1 spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, this season’s success has been somewhat unexpected for the Oslo native.

    “It’s a little surprising, honestly,” Ruud said. “I didn’t think I was going to be in this situation when we started this year. I don’t feel any pressure, I used it as motivation today to think that maybe this is the only chance in my career to win the tournament and become No. 1.”

    Ruud, who improves to 41-15 this season, will meet Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the fourth round Sunday.
